MARIONVILLE, Mo. -- A city police officer shot and killed a man who shot the officer with a shotgun early Friday afternoon. Just before the shootout, the man with the shotgun, Jesse Miller, killed another man who stopped to check on a two-vehicle accident involving Miller.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Miller was walking down the road about 1:00 when Marionville Police Officer Andy Clark drove up, got out of his patrol car, and crouched behind his car door as he tried to get Miller to drop the shotgun. That's when Miller shot Clark and the officer returned fire.

Just before the shooting, Miller was in a two-vehicle accident about a block away. When a passerby, Joseph M. Rich, known to friends as Big Mike, stopped to check on the accident, the Highway Patrol says, Miller killed Rich. Rich was driving a white bus.

The shooting was near the intersection of Highway ZZ at Western, near Marionville High School on the western edge of the town. Miller's body lay at the shooting scene for some time, as did Rich's body.

Clark was hit in the shoulder and neck by the shotgun blast. An air ambulance took him to a hospital but he was conscious and talking to other officers and medical personnel.

Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and Lawrence County sheriff's deputies rushed to the scene to help with the investigation.

This will be an interesting story to follow. Wonder if Miller hadn't suffered some head trauma or was on something to act like this.

I was just in DC on 4/19 headed to the air and space museum when the neo-nazi group marched at the national mall. There were hundreds of cops, all in riot gear surrounding the group of about 30 from the national socialist movement.

Gunman ID'd as son of white supremacist
Good Samaritan gunned down was a traveling tattoo artist.
Mike Penprase • News-Leader • March 30, 2008

The man who reportedly gunned down a Good Samaritan who stopped to help after an auto crash was identified Saturday as the son of a longtime local white supremacist.

Jesse Miller --who shot a passing motorist who had stopped to help after Miller's SUV collided with a pickup in Marionville -- was the middle son of Frazier Glenn Miller, the Marionville Police Department confirmed Saturday.

The 30-year-old, who was himself shot dead by a Marionville police officer, had not been involved in any confrontations with police before Friday, according to Marionville police detective and former Lawrence County Sheriff Doug Seneker.

The elder Miller was involved in the white supremacist movement before moving to southwest Missouri in the 1980s. He was known for periodically distributing a white supremacist newspaper in the area.

His son died during a series of incidents beginning with a traffic crash on Lawrence County ZZ on the west side of Marionville around 1 p.m. Friday.

After the crash between Jesse Miller's sport utility vehicle and a pickup just west of the city limits, Joseph M. Rich, 55, stopped his converted school bus to help the drivers and a woman riding in Miller's vehicle, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Miller pulled a 12-gauge shotgun from his vehicle and shot Rich, the patrol reported.

A few minutes later, Marionville Police officer Andy Clark arrived and ordered Miller to put down his weapon.
Miller then shot and wounded Clark, who returned fire with his AR-15 rifle and killed Miller, the patrol said.

The elder Miller was at the scene of the shootings at ZZ and Western Street for a short time as law enforcement officers swarmed the area Friday afternoon, Seneker said.

"Frazier called up the sheriff's office this morning about recovering his son's car," he said Saturday.

A woman who identified herself as Frazier Glenn Miller's wife said Miller was not available and would have no comment.

"I don't think we want to talk to you," said the woman, who declined to give her first name during a brief telephone conversation.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mike Watson said a crime investigation team is continuing its efforts to determine what sparked the shootout.

Rich was a tattoo artist who worked at Atlantis Tattoo in Marionville. Known as "Big Mike," Rich was driving on ZZ from his home between Marionville and Aurora to get to work at the tattoo parlor on U.S. 60 when he was killed, said fellow tattoo artist Tom Cooney.

The small white converted school bus Rich was driving was his mobile tattoo parlor, Cooney said. "He traveled all over the country doing tattoos at motorcycle rallies," Cooney said. "Well known across the country."

Cooney said he wasn't surprised to hear Rich had stopped to help at the accident scene because he had done that before.

Rich, the father of three older children, was not acquainted with Jesse Miller, Cooney said.

Funeral arrangements for Rich haven't been determined, but he and Rich's friends will honor Rich's wishes by holding a memorial party Saturday at Atlantis Tattoo, Cooney said.

"He actually didn't want a funeral," Cooney said. "He wanted a party, and that's what we're going to do, have a party."

It's likely Clark will be released from the hospital soon, Seneker said.

The shot from Miller's weapon hit him in the upper shoulder and passed through, he said. "He's doing good," Seneker said.

This isn't exactly open carry, shouldn't it be moved to general, as it's not a self defense article either - unless there are more details that haven't been pointed out.

Unless there is a reason that this relates to lawful self defense by civilian, closed to prevent mission creep. OP can PM me if he wants to fix it.
