Five people were hurt in separate shootings in Milwaukee in just over two hours Monday night, said Capt. Christopher Domagalski of the Milwaukee Police Department's Criminal Investigation Bureau. All five victims were expected to survive, Domagalski said. No suspects were in custody as of late Monday.
According to Domagalski:
The first shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m., when a 39-year-old man was shot in the jaw in the 2000 block of N. 40th St. Police had not determined a motive for the shooting.
About 15 minutes later, a 49-year-old man was shot in the left hand and left thigh during an attempted robbery at a bus stop at N. 18th St. and W. Wright streets. Police were searching for three men who wore masks during the robbery attempt.
Police had not determined a motive for the following three shootings:
About 9:15, a male whose age was unknown was shot in the left hand and left thigh in the 3100 block of N. Holton St. The victim was in stable condition.
A 21-year-old man was shot in the back and the right foot near N. 92nd St. and W. Birch Ave. about 10:30 p.m.
And at about 10:40 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the left hip near N. 32nd and W. Vliet streets
Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not available late Monday. As of Tuesday, no suspects are in custody.

Citizens cannot legally carry guns in Chicago to defend themselves against attacks. Chicago bans possession, retail sales, and private sales and/or transfers of handguns and also bans the sale and/or transfer of certain types of handgun ammunition. It also requires that all other guns legally possessed be registered.

CHICAGO (AP) — An epidemic of gunfire rattled the city during the weekend, with at least 32 people shot and six killed.
Police Superintendent Jody Weis blamed an excess of guns and gangs for the rash of violence. "There are just too many weapons here," Weis said at a news conference Sunday. "Too many guns, too many gangs."
At the time of that news conference, the toll was 26 separate shootings and four deaths. Later, three more shootings were reported within two hours on the West Side late Sunday and early Monday, resulting in two more deaths and four more people wounded, police said.
The other weekend shootings were scattered all over the city. Police said they included gang shootings, drive-by attacks, and even one case in which someone used an AK-47 to shoot up a plumbing supply store.
During the same weekend last year, there were 19 shootings, including four homicides, and 21 shootings were reported during the same weekend in 2006, Chicago police statistics show.
Ironically, on Saturday, the police department issued new statistics showing that the city's murder rate for March was down about 1 percent from March 2007.
