RIVERDALE -- Police Chief Dave Hansen was hospitalized Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the ankle during a training exercise at police headquarters, authorities said.
Riverdale Fire Department Capt. Dave Ermer said emergency medical personnel told him the 10:30 a.m. shooting occurred inside a conference room at the police station at 4580 S. Weber River Drive.
Hansen, 54, was apparently demonstrating how to properly clean a gun when a round jammed, causing the weapon to discharge, Ermer said.
He didn't have any information about the purpose of the training session or know how many people may have witnessed the shooting.
Riverdale Police Department officials refused Saturday to provide information to the Standard-Examiner regarding the shooting.
Riverdale Mayor Bruce Burrows said the bullet apparently struck a bone in Hansen's ankle. He did not know whether the gun involved in the shooting was Hansen's service revolver or another weapon.
Riverdale police officers carry .40-caliber pistols.
Hansen was taken by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, where he was expected to undergo surgery. He was listed in stable condition Saturday evening.
The Riverdale Police Department will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting, Burrows said.
Hansen has been police chief since 2006 and has spent his entire 23-year law enforcement career with the Riverdale Police Department, said his younger brother, state Rep. Neil Hansen, D-Ogden.
Neil Hansen said he regularly goes target practicing with his brother and described him as safety-conscious.
"I've never seen him do anything reckless," he said.

A police chief shoots himself while demonstrating cleaning a pistol? He needs to shoot himself properly from embarassment.
