A 16-year-old Petersburg hunter died over the weekend after he slipped on some ice and accidentally shot himself in the head, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The boy, Jacob Madsen, was reported shot at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, when Petersburg police called troopers. The accident happened while the victim and a 17-year-old boy were hunting grouse along Dry Straits Road, about 28 miles out of Petersburg, troopers said.

Troopers from Juneau responded and found that the boy had slipped on the ice and his .22-caliber rifle discharged a single shot into his head while they were walking, troopers said.

The older boy ran to get help from three fishermen who were about a mile away. The boy's body was loaded into a truck and taken to Petersburg. On the way, an ambulance met them and completed the trip to Petersburg Medical Center, located in the community 120 miles south of Juneau.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. Troopers say they do not suspect foul play.

must have been a short rifle to be able to do that.

feel worry for his family and friends.
It was a little .22 rifle. I feel for the parents and also for the friendwho was with him at the time. Some people would say that he shouldn't of had a round chambered.. I do somost of the time as this is Alaska and you never know what is around the next bend or tree but to always exercise trigger and muzzle discipline is paramount, not to mention the use of a safety.

Always keep your finger away from the trigger until ready to fire!!
