"No Firearms" Signs and Trespass Laws

The question is: Does a posted sign immediately create a trespass issue, or must an owner or authorized representitive personally inform you that they do not want you to carry?

How black and white is this? Does one have an arguement to state that the sign was obscured, or does one have to read each posting on the door for fear of trespass charges?

Anyone have any experiences with this? Had a manager or such automatically call the police, etc?
