I sort of like the idea of carrying an empty holster where it is completely visible.
When some liberal walks up and says, "Why is your holster empty?" I could hand him or her a sheet of paper and calmly walk away:
You asked me why my holster is empty. It seems ridiculous, doesn't it? What good is an empty holster in a situation where a person might need to defend himself, his family or another citizen against a violent, deadly attack that occurs without warning? Unless you have spent the past 30 years in a coma, you must certainly know this sort of attack occurs all around the country. No place is immune to such violence. Virginia Tech was a recent incident, but Columbine also comes to mind, and lets not forget the day a deranged man walked into a McDonalds in San Ysidro California with several guns and the intent to kill as many people as possible.
Upon noticing my empty holster, did you perceive me as a threat to your personal safety? Was my appearance such that you felt uncomfortable being in the same area with me? I will assume you did not, since you approached me about my empty holster. You must have correctly concluded that I am a law-abiding citizen who happens to support the 2nd Amendment and the RIGHT to Keep and Bear Arms!
Now that you know I am no threat to your safety, would it bother you if I were carrying a loaded firearm in this holster? Do you believe that simply by having a loaded weapon in my possession, my demeanor would change, or my respect for human life would diminish? Do you believe that a gun has a mind of its own, and can cause a person to abandon all reason and logic?
How would you feel about my having a weapon in this holster if God forbid, someone burst through the door with a gun drawn and began to kill everyone in this place today? Would you fear MY weapon, or thank God that an armed law-abiding citizen was there with you, a citizen who can not only defend his own life, but quite possibly take down the assailant before he wreaks havoc on the people in this building, a citizen who could defend YOUR life as well. Unfortunately for both of us, current laws do not permit us to carry a loaded firearm, even though it is our RIGHT under the U.S. Constitution. Therefore, if something did occur here today, I would be powerless to aid in your survival, or even my own.
Criminals do not obey gun laws. More gun laws, stricter gun control measures, gun registration, gun bans, handgun confiscation and all of the "feel good" restrictions that have been imposed on YOU and ME, and which WE OBEY, are completely IGNORED by criminals. Since criminals are ignoring the twenty thousand gun laws on the books now, what would make an intelligent person believe that more gun laws will be obeyed by criminals?
You and I are law-abiding citizens. As such, we have met here today as UNARMED and DEFENSELESS VICTIMS of any person or persons who might enter this building with criminal intent and the desire to kill defenseless civilians. In the same way that I maintain an auto insurance policy that I hope I will never need to use, and have installed smoke detectors in my home that I hope I will never hear, I for one, would like to have the ability to carry a loaded firearm for self-defense, while hoping that I will never be called upon to use it in self-defense.
The police have publicly stated, and the courts have affirmed that law enforcement is NOT required to protect any individual person. Criminals do not announce their intentions! Knowing this, doesn't it seem ridiculous that the law forbids us to carry a loaded weapon for self-defense?
I wish you a long and healthy life. The good news is that the odds are in your favor that you will never find yourself in a situation where you are wishing you had a loaded weapon for self-defense. The bad news is that if you DO find yourself in a situation where some madman is walking among the public, shooting people and looking for more people to kill, it will be too late to write a letter to your local sheriff and your county and state legislators demanding your Right to Keep and Bear Arms. In fact, I'm guessing you'll barely have enough time to say a short prayer.
