Great Britain, a once-great nation has, during much of the last century, suffered from the disease of parasitic liberalism, an ultimately fatal disease for any body politic in which an insidious organism slowly and quietly sucks out the physical and intellectual lifeblood until the host organism weakens and dies. Before this process is complete, a certain peculiar dementia sets in, robbing the people of the reasoning skills and insight necessary to fight the infestation. There is little we can do now to help our English-speaking cousins abroad, but the real question is whether we are willing to allow the same pathological process to eat out the substance of our culture.

A link to that article ought to be posted as a response to every gun-control article in the US press.

(UK)Gun crime facts
Gun crime up 35% in 2002
Firearms used in 9,974 recorded crimes
Gun crime up 600% since 1978
Handgun crimes have doubled since Dunblane

Hard to believe so many cops DON'T want to have a gun immediately available. I guess it is too heavy. :D

I can only guess that criminals just do not shot cops over there so the cops are not worried about it.

Please don't call it liberalism. Thomas Jefferson was a liberal, a word which has the same root as "liberty". These people have stolen the title and turned it against us. Some people wanted to reclaim it a few decades ago, and had to make up a new word, libertarian, to get around the stigma of being associated with brain-eating socialists and statists.

Many people already use that phrase, others use the term "classical liberal" tomean the same thing. Unfortunately, it usually goes right over people's heads, including ditto-sheep conservatives who get all their info from neo-con radio. While we're on the subject, "conservative" means you are someone who resists change, you are trying to conserve something. What, I don't know, since we failed to conserve so much since 1776, the only thing we are trying to conserve today is a massive bloated overbearing government that doesn't know when or where to stop taxing us and bombing people and spying on phone calls or strip-searching old ladies in airports. Who wants to conserve any of that stuff? Those of us who are sick of it and want to get back to the old constitution may as well start calling ourselves liberals.

Okay, sorry for the rant, but it felt good, you know?:quirky

You know, why not?

The Federalists stole and mis-used the word, giving cover to their non-federal ideas. (We already had a federation).

Why not just steal back the word, "liberal."

Smooth sailing for the most part. Most of them will think we're an ally until its too late. Then, when they whine about it, we can just 'splain it to them.

Yeah, that's another idea that got lost in the fray. The words "federation" and "confederation" mean essentially the same thing. Just as libertarians had to make up a new word for liberal after the socialists stole it, the rebels of the 1860's had to make up a new word for "federal": confederacy, since by then "federal" had come to mean a dominant central government.

Read the "NewSpeak" appendix of George Orwell's 1984 for a good treatise on the importance of controlling language in order to maintain political power.
