Thanks for all of the great input. The gun that I am going to get is the XD 40 compact w/ 3 in barrel. I think that there is enough reason to try it out and I can always trade it if I don't like it.

My other choice was the S&W M&P 40. Who knows, I may end up with that one too.

Well some time has passed on this thread and I did get the XD40 compact. It has been a great gun. I guess that I've put at least 1000 rds thru it with NO problems at all. Thanks to all for your recommendations and for most of your opinions!
