I thought it might be fun for folks to check in throughout the weekend and let us know how you're celebrating Independence Day and OCing at the same time. I'll get the party started.

Got home from work and changed into my OC rig, a Serpa CQC, Colt Combat Commander and 2 spare mags. I took one of my sons down to Blockbuster (Horizon and College) to get a few movies for the weekend. My wife and I are going to watch some of the John Adams miniseries that HBO ran a while back. It was VeggieTales for the boy.

My son and I were there browsing around for 15 minutes or so. No comments, friendly service.

We stopped at Jack in the Box (Horizon and Horizon Ridge) on the way home, as my wife is pregnant (due in a couple weeks) and was craving some jalapeno poppers. No comments and again, friendly service.

Don't ya love it? Only had 1 negative encounter in Vegas, and they simple and politely asked me not to OC in their store anymore. I was still allowed to finish shopping.

You are up in the same are I am. I too have never had a problem with any of the places you mention. I have only once been followed around by a funny little man at the Vons there on Horizon/Horizon Ridge.

We decided relatively late in the day to head to downtown Henderson for the fireworks. Would've been a good chance to meet up. As it happened, my wife thought she might be going into labor, so we decided walking around downtown in the heat wasn't the best idea.

Instead, we parked up on the corner of Van Wagenen and Ocean in an empty parking lot that gave a perfect view of the top of the Convention Center where the fireworks were to be launched. We were with about 50-60 other cars - OCing, of course.

Got a couple of sideways glances at first, but that was it. No comments, no calls to 911. We were there about 90 minutes or so, and just got home.

Hope everyone else had a great evening, and continues to OC! If I drop off the face of the planet for a few days, you can assume we had our 4th baby. :)

Of American independence, John Adams wrote in July 1776:
... I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.
SFA did its part with plenty of gunfire!

Although short notice (we made a late decision and sent an "all members" email on the evening of July 2), about 50 people attended our Independence Day celebration at our private shooting range.

Shooting, eating, and socializing with great, freedom loving Americans. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate Independence Day!

I have to report an encounter in which I was rather fearful. This might have been a dream and these events may not have actually occurred.

For the 4th, we went to the airport viewing area off Sunset to watch the festivities. I have an Avalanche, so I backed in and we were able to climb on top of the bed of the truck to sit on the roof comfortably. After backing up and climbing onto the roof, the guy in the car next to us rolled down his window and made a comment about how my backing into the spot irritated him because I blocked his view and that he "usually shoots people" who irritate him.

As usual, I was OC, but obviously this guy didn't notice. I responded in the most polite way possible and said I was sorry to have blocked his view, but there was no where else to park.

He got out of his car and slammed the door. I immediately stood up, reached for my G23, thumbed the retention release and activated the flashlight without actually drawing. Reacting to the situation as I trained her, my wife jumped off the truck and went towards other people standing at the fence. Again, I never drew, but upon seeing my hand firmly gripped, the man yelled something about "man don't shoot me, i was only kidding" and quickly retreated to his car.

I then jumped down and stood with my truck between me and his car. He drove off as I continued to move around keeping the truck between us. My wife ran back and we left quickly in the other direction.

I hate to think how the night might have turned out.

Unfortunately, I had to work on the 4th. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I got to drive around the valley and see a bunch of fireworks. I had to drive down to Laughlin at around 10pm to fix an ATM at one of the casinos. There were hundreds (or so it seemed) of cars out on the dry lake bed off the 95 near Boulder City (GoogleMap it N35.8823, W114.9267), all of them setting off fireworks. The traffic around me slowed to about 35mph, so I got to enjoy the show without even stopping.

I was OCing my new RIA 1911 for the drive. I have to switch to CC when I go into casinos/banks. Even if they were ok with me carrying while I work, my boss isn't. The company has a no guns policy that I violate every day. There's no way I'm going to repair ATMs unarmed. Especially the outdoor drive-up ones that we have to fix as late as 10pm. I'd rather be alive and unemployed than dead and still unemployed.

Saturday morning, I got off work at around 6am, so I went out to the desert for some shooting. It's still pretty cool right after sunrise, so outdoor shooting isn't bad even in the summer. My favorite shoot-spot is south of Sloan (Shoot-Spot is at N35.8289, W115.2185, the turn-off from Las Vegas Blvd is at N35.8547, W115.2552) Someone left a board out there that's about 3'x4'x1" of tightly packed fiberglass. I shot if a few times with .45 hollowpoints. The back edge of the bullets didn't reach the front edge of the board. They did make some nice mushroom deformations though. I pulled them off to show some friends.

On the way back home, I stopped at CVS on Windmill/Las Vegas Blvd. No comments about the 1911. A while back, a friend and I were encouraged to carry at the 7-11 across the street from there. The lady working there saw my friend's empty shoulder holster and asked why it was empty. "I'm safer working here when the good guys are packing."

Saturday afternoon, I helped a friend move into his new house behind Lone Mountain. None of the neighbors seemed to care about the gun on my hip. When I told my friend's wife that the gun was made in the Philippines, she said "Me too!" They're both looking forward to the next range trip.

Well, the weekend is over and it's back to work at my "No weapons policy" place of employment.

My OCing activities ended early this weekend, as we ended up in the hospital Saturday night with pre-term labor. Definitely no OC happening there, so I concealed. That all turned out OK, and we spent Sunday (after church) taking a nap, then hanging out with my in-laws for a swim, then dinner at Sunset Station's mexican restaurant.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Independence Day celebration and long weekend!
