First, I'd like to say sorry for not having gotten this up sooner, this happened on Tuesday, the 1st.

I was shopping with the girlfriendat theWal Mart next to the Supermall, and I had my Kimber in my leg holster, as usual, in jeans and a tank top with a cowboy hat on. Had a nice little chat with the greeter on the way in concerning my firearm until I satisfied her curiosity. I had been in there for at least a half hour and had just gotten into the sporting goods section when two police officers rounded the corner in front of me. One appeared to be a supervisor of some sort, with a button up shirt and tie on under his "bullet proof" vest (LEO1)and the other was a uniformed female officer (LEO2), followed by a Wal Mart manager (MAN1). Both officers seemed fairly relaxed, no hands on sidearms or anything.LEO1 told me that they had a MWAG call and they had to check it out.I informed them that my understanding was that Wal Mart Corporate policy was to mirror state law. They asked the usual questions for ID and CPL, which I provided.LEO1 said that they do the check to make sure that I can legally carry. He brought up that he knew that OC was legal and the department was working on a training bulletin already, but they had not yet seen OC until me.I also had a copy of the Seattle PD bulletin on OC which I provided toLEO1 at this point and offered a couple OCDO pamphlets which were refused. LEO1 also confirmed with me that I know that MAN1 has the right to ask me to leave and that I need to follow his request and then confirmed with MAN1 that he did in fact want me to leave, but I could still pay for my items. LEO2 called in all the information while I talked to LEO1 returned my ID and CPL with a smile and a comment about me having gotten my CPL from Auburn (she sounded surprised).

At this point the conversation turned from formal (although anything coming from an LEO, especially in uniform,I consider to be formal) to more personal, with both of them having questions concerning why I carry and whatmy intent with OC is. I explained that our mission is to educate the public that not only bad guys have guns, that self defense is not criminal, and that we as citizens havea RKBA. They both seemed very open to the idea and warned me, multiple times, that people aren't going to grasp it right away and I should expect to see PD responding to MWAG calls and probably some harassment from citizens. They complimented me on "handling the situation well" before I was escorted to the checkout line at the request of MAN1. The LEOs waited by the door while I checked out while MAN1 (supervised? lol) from behind me. As I approached the exit, LEO1 asked if he could get a few OCDO pamphlets, which I provided. The LEOs and MAN1 exited the building when my girlfriend and I did, and they were talking to each other when I lost sight of them on the way to the car.

I really need to get me a voice recorder...

Let me know what you think folks. I'll be following up with MAN1 when I get a chance to go back. I have been VERY busy with work.

I think at the point MAN1 asked me to leave (but would still bew happy to have my money)I would have explained he can't have it both ways. You either want me as a customer or you don't.

I would have gladly left at that point, and taken my business elsewhere. Even if to another Wal-Mart. While some may think a Wal-Mart is a Wal-Mart, is a Wal-Mart, the fact is any chain store holds it's management responsible. If that store is losing business, generating complaints, etc. The manager will hear about it and may end up looking for work somewhere else.

Wal-Mart has a known corporate policy of being OK with guns. If there is a problem with a particular WM,I would talk to someone higher on the food chain.

Iwould add that you should contact Jason Schmidt, and inform him of the situation, requesting that he inform the manager of Corporate policy if they want your continued business.

i've seen OC at that wal-mart before, and i didn't see him get any flack...

that one sucks anyway, you can NEVER find anyone at the ammo counter. just a short drive up to federal way and you've got a brand new supercenter + costco and sportsmans warehouse.

LOL. Actually, I think it was they guy at the ammo counter that called the manager on me. He was on his cell phone a few minutes before the encounter and kept trying to not look at my gun. Thank you guys for the number. That will definitely come in handy.

if it was the older blonde hair/blonde beard guy, he hates me. i run around to track him down everytime i'm in there. i think he hides.

everytime i ask how much a box of .223 is, and when he says "$8.99 like everytime you ask" i say "ouch! not at that price! gimme a brick of federal .22."

if he had a sense of humor it'd be a running joke, but since he doesn't it sort of makes me look like an ass :)

He seemed that way... not sure about hair color or all that, but this was a big (read fat) guy. If memory serves, he looked to be about 35.

It seems like I have read a few of these Walmart posts. Is there any way to get a written policy on open carry in their stores from Home office?

Than we could just print it out and hand it to them.

NOTE: I am not defending this manager in any way

You may want to note that the management group that owns the super mall property expressly bans firearms. If Walmart is leasing the property from the same management company, they may have worded the contract to prohibited firearms. I do not know whether or not this is the case but it is something to consider.

Is there a sign at the entrance to the parking lot? People tell me you can't carry at the Kitsap mall....but I have never seen a posting. How are we supposed to kow if it is a private Landlord prohibition if they don't post it?

I had an incident back in April at the Federal Way Walmart (not the super center). I was standing across the main aisle from the cash registers when a gentleman saw my gun. He flagged down a floor manager at the registers and gave her the business about me. The manager in a loud clear voice told him "it was legal in Washington and policy allowed it as well." He said something else and headed off in a huff.

Jarhead and I were at the Safeway near my house (July 4th) when the cashier spotted his Tangfolio. She made the comment of us being local neighborhood guys and supported our right to carry. She'd like to see more folks carrying to help clean up the neighborhood. Very pleasant experience. On the way out the security guard saw us and his eyes were as big as saucers. He walked to the door and watched us load up, then went back in.

IMHO -I think it helps to be a regular customer, they see you face often enough and feel more at ease.

There is a sign posted at the SuperMall its Rule 1 of their silly list of rules. It prohibits all weapons regardless of legality or state/local permits.

I OCed there a few weeks back and I didn't get a word from anyone except the old gentleman from the paint counter. He told me it wasn't wise to OC and that he was amazed that I was let in. I told him about Walmarts Policy and was even willing to have him ask his maanger but he just avoided the subject. He told me he was a CPL holder but OC was against store policy and it was unwise. Other then the talk I had with the gentleman I didn't get bothered.
