Obviously "good for nothing"drug dealers and pimps. We are better off without them in our world.

Is it just a phase of the moon, or have we touched on a subject that inspires certain people post things that make us look like vigilantes?

OK, I was out of line. Not for thinking it, just for writing it.

Phase of the moon, nah, just when kids get violated and the parent gets beat down hard by worthless POS animals posing as humans, folks tend to react a bit differently.

Besides, I've heard no "vigilante" talk here. No one has suggested hunting them down and dispense justice w/o due process of law. All I've read is how we would have reacted if WE were the victim faced with our family at risk and a gang of predators being called in to take part in the kill.

I'd be interested to hear how you would react...

These are the reasons I carry as I have 2 daughters. I just hope I am never put in this type of situation to have to use my weapon to defend my family, which by the way is the onlyreasonI would expose it for use.

I think cases like this provoke strong reactions because it addresses a fundamental aspect of humanity and touches a primal nerve, a man protecting his family from a pack of human jackals.

that LEO cracks me up... "pulling things off a hardrive you thought was deleted" saying it like they have some super secret magic software that does it.

its common knowledge and there are several free pieces of software that will do it on various file systems.

how will they get the information off when i reset everything to 0 with a format
or cave man style shotgun the hdd into dust

Shotgun an HDD into oblivion and you're right, there's not much to get it back. Delete the information in Windows and you're also right, there are several free software programs that will "undelete" a file. However, there are more specialized programs and even hardware that can get information off an intact or even damaged disk when the drive has been removed or fails, and even when data is overwritten, a "ghost" of that data remains in the magnetic signature of the disk that can be picked up with the right tool and reconstructed with the right software. Why do you think the FBI's data protection policy involves retiring disk drives by formatting them and then writing over with random nonsense data, repeating twice more, then throwing the disk into a wood chipper? Cause anything less and if you really want to you can read that disk's original contents.

There's not much you can do to erase a HDD completely. My 2 nephews helped pull some child porn off of one for aDA once. It had even been disassembled in a not too orderly manner. The guy said something like "No way. I formatted that hard drive 4 F'ing times". Needless to say, he had already been read his rights and denied it was even his or ever seeing it before. OOPS--BUSTED!

"Formatting" does nothing to delete data. All formatting does is erases the partition table so an operating system will not use the data available and will write over it, but if it's hasn't been actually written over (several times) it can be recovered. Securely deleting your data takes a long time and involves writing random data over the top of all your existing data multiple times.

If you want real privacy however, use an encrypted filesystem or at least keep your important files inside a truecrypt hidden volume. However, even then you still need to be careful not to leave your computer on and be away from it because your encryption key can be recovered from ram if the computer has not been left turned off for several minutes.

Also, a federal judge in Vermont ruled that you cannot be forced to give your encryption key as this violates the 5th Amendment.

The father acted appropriately and deadly force was not reasonable or defensible at first. Some jerk touched his 12 year old girl. The father responded apparently verbally, and I would expect with posturing as well. The punk and his buddy were out-manned obviously so he called his 6 pack members to attack this man. Obviously they are too cowardly to act man to man and have to either attack children (the girl) or get a group to attack a man. Once they had the strength in numbers they attacked. At that point obviously, deadly force would have been appropriate.

I really do not understand the mindset that such barbaric acts do not rise to the level of a capital offense. If a pack of dogs roamed the neighborhood attacking people, we would put down the entire pack. And the dogs are simply following instinct, not acting with malice and are not aware of the consequences of their actions. These human packs of jackals roam neighborhoods attacking people with full knowledge that what they are doing is wrong (which is why they run when authorities show up) and they understand the consequences of their behaviors. There is a great difference between a one-on-one fight and a roving pack of thugs attacking people. One the pack mentality is invoked and group-think takes hold they are going to maim and kill people and after getting away with it a few times they will be emboldened to escalate. Simple behaviorism, well documented and proved.

The first jerk touching the daughter deserved a punch in the nose and a kick in the butt to redirect his behavior and to impress upon him the inappropriateness of his conduct. Once they attacked as a group though, lethal force was warranted as 8 on 1 is imminent danger of a great bodily harm.

This incident occured about 20 minutes from my home; and its another reason I do carry.....however, this isnt just a matter of self defense....its a matter of piss poor parenting.

Most of the thugs were juveniles....so it begs to be asked, where the hell were thier parents?

It seems to me that the parents chould be right next to thier kids in the courts having to post bail not only for thier kids, but for themselves as well.

:uhoh: Only one was a juvenile - 14 years old. The rest were legally adults:

...Evans, 20, of Brooklyn Park, is charged with a misdemeanor assault for that offense, Tate said. Besides Evans, five other men and an unnamed juvenile were charged with third-degree felony assault. The five are Derry D. Evans, 19, Minneapolis; Devondre Evans-Lewis, 18, of Columbia Heights; Terry L. Arnold, 22, Brooklyn Park; Andrew D. Shannon, 19, of Minneapolis, and Anthony C. Gildersleeve, 20, Edina.

ETA: Still bad parenting ...

Without knowing the suspects, I can only imagine what the scenario would have been if it was one of them out with their kids, wife, gf, etc... You know that he would have said something to the group, and would be justified in doing so. So it would be ok for him to respond to an assault, but not for anyother dad, husband, bf to respond in kind.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure these type of guys would respond if the shoe was on the other foot.

On 'doze, it does zero the drive (unless you do a quick format) and checks it.

Nope. It actually rebuilds the format of whatever partition you're formatting. On modern systems, this usually this means building a file allocation table or master file table, B+ trees, a journal, etc.

Ok, I should shut up about this stuff now...[/quote]

Sorry to be OT, but no one should think that windows format tool zeros out a drive:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302686
When you choose to run a regular format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is responsible for the majority of the time that it takes to format a volume.

Files are removed (space on the hdd is marked as available, it is not overwritten). To be securely deleted everything at the byte level must be overwritten and to be secure it must be done several times with varying patters because residual magnetic traces from the previous data can still be recovered from the hard drive. To securely wipe your disk you need a utility like killdisk.
