Press Release – For Immediate Distribution

In response to the Police Chief of Hastings, Chief Sarver, law-abiding
citizens will be walking down Main Street in Hastings open carrying.
Chief Sarver in response to a letter to the editor responded by saying it was
brandishing, a misdemeanor. He failed to say that the Michigan Attorney

Amendment rights to join us on Thursday, July 24th at 4 PM. We will be
meeting at Richie's Coffee Shop (146 W. State Street, Hastings, MI 49058).
An attorney that supports your right to keep and bear arms will be joining us.

It is important to note that this is a peaceful demonstration of our constitutional rights and everyone must be on their best behavior. All well mannered, law-abiding citizens are welcome to join us. Please RSVP if you can. Please do not dress like a paramilitary organization. Wear ordinary clothing that fits in well with the general public.

I've a change in plans, and right now things are kind of "up in the air".

If anyone is going down to this and would like to have a rider along who is willing to share gas money, let me know.

Easy there DopaVash, my comment was tied to this, from above:

Chief Sarver in response to a letter to the editor responded by saying it was
    brandishing, a misdemeanor.

    __________________________________________________ ________________

Now, my comment was to show that, by very definition, that merely having a firearm on your person, in a holster, is NOT brandishing. I did not pull those points together when I posted yesterday, my mistake.

As a gun owner, a CHL holder, a citizen of a state which does have OC, a NRA member, and one who supports the CHL/OC movement across our nation, rest assured I support Texas in its movement toward what can only be referred to as the commonsense extension of self defense, that being open carry.

I was there, I wore a replica black powder pistol, and I had an absolutly great experience.

I am very new to this org and will plan to read and write more in the future.

I guess i did not clarify what I wore. I was carrying a replica black powder 2-shot (over/under) derringer. It is a disabled weapon with no firing pin or cap and is not even considered a firearm under the law. My husband and I own it together since it is a 'curio' and not a firearm subject to owning with a permint.

I was there to make the statement that women need to protect themselves also and not rely on anyone else to protect them.

The Detroit Free Press and MSP are not entirely correct:

    http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...=2008807250352

    Rules for gun toting

Legal: Carrying a gun openly in most public places.
    Correct.

Illegal: Carrying a gun into a church, bank, court, theater, sports arena, day care center, hospital or bar.

Correct, if you're concealing. Incorrect, if you're open carrying with CPL (except court room). This is a bad message to send. The anti observes OCer in bank, for example, and places the MWAG call.

Illegal: Brandishing a gun, defined as waving or pointing menacingly.

    Correct.

They can't do it: Local governments can't enact laws prohibiting carrying guns openly.

    Correct.

Hidden: A county-issued permit is required to carry a concealed weapon.

Correct, if carrying outside of your property.

Driving: If you're driving, you must take the holster off and store the gun unloaded in a trunk or far from an easy grab away.

Correct, only if you don't have a CPL. If, for example, an antiobserves an OCer getting into his/her vehicle, they will assume it's illegal...MWAG call.

Handguns vs. long guns (rifles/shotguns): The Michigan State Police say you can carry a long gun or a handgun as long as you're not brandishing it.

    Correct.

Private property: Businesses or individuals can set their own rules about carrying a gun, openly or concealed, on their own property.

    Correct.

Actually, Dave Neeson (in the wheelchair) is a long-time activist friend of mine. Dave is always on the front lines with me, no matter what I'm doing. There is a picture of him in my book (Blood in the Streets: Concealed Carry and the OK Corral) holding my baby.

Dave's a good man. Actually, we didn't plan to put him up front. He's just a natural. born leader, so he got there first.

    Fellow open carriers,
The event was a smashing success, even according to the media. Channel 3 (Kazoo) channel 8 (GR) and the Detroit Free Press were all there. There was no real negative press coverage. Detroit Free Press http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...EWS06/80725035
Here's the News 3 Kazoo coverage.

    http://www.wwmt.com/ Here's channel 8 in GR. http://www.woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8733074
There were a few anti's outside but I don't think they were even given coverage. They said a few mean things but we ignored them. There were over 40 people there, most of them openly carrying. A good mix of men, women, and children. Most of the general public lined the streets and watched us march down the sidewalk. Many of them were taking pictures like they'd never seen a free person before. The speech went well and the anti-gun Police Chief never showed his face. In fact, in a town crawling with city, state and county cops, there was an unusual absence of law enforcement. I found out later that the County Prosecutor (one of my former CPL students) had called the Chief and greased the skids for us. I am proud to announce that the City of Hastings, which once passed a city ordinance against CPL holders, is now safe for open carry. I'll be carrying openly in Barry county more often now, especially in the city. It was really quite fun. I felt more like a free man and less like a criminal with something to hide. Will be writing articles about it soon for opencarry.org, http://www.tednugent.com, and http://www.mcrgo.org plus a few others.

Congratulations on the event's success. It's always gratifying to see that sanity and rationality can win out, when well-mannered and upstanding citizens come together to achieve it.

    This story makes me happy.
    Why open carry? Because 1911 > 911.

Story wasn't bad at all, except now I am extremely pissed at the Brady Campaign and Peter Hamm. I give blood every 8 weeks for free to the local people, I am a volunteer firefighter, serve on the local HUD housing commission for low income people in our community, as well as give time to the local Relay for Life campaign. I give my time and volunteer for many organizations and here he is saying because I wear a gun on my hip I am not a good volunteer. maybe I am just a better multi tasker then he is I guess.

On a side note, after reading the Brady campaign's mission statement, I would think they are for every single law abiding American wearing a gun on thier hip openly. That will stop gun violence faster then banning most guns, at least in my opinion and proven my DC's gun ban.

Thread hijacking over now, was a really nice press release, and looks like your event turned out great. Well organized and sounds perfect, hats off skip!

It's legal to carry concealed in a bank (with a CPL).

Michigan has an extremely complex set of rules for off limits places arising from the overlay of at least 2 statutes.

The last time I looked at this, only a person with a concealed handgun permit could open carry in a hospital, but he could not concealed carry. It has been said a similar off wrinkle exists for banks.

You guys should put in a cleanup bill to remove all these off limits areas for everyone, and just make the distinction of concealed/not concealed requires a permity/does not require a permit.
