CALIFORNIA CODES
ELECTIONS CODE

18544. (a) Any person in possession of a firearm or any uniformed
peace officer, private guard, or security personnel or any person who
is wearing a uniform of a peace officer, guard, or security
personnel, who is stationed in the immediate vicinity of, or posted
at, a polling place without written authorization of the appropriate
city or county elections official is punishable by a fine not
exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), by imprisonment in the
state prison for 16 months or two or three years or in a county jail
not exceeding one year, or by both the fine and imprisonment.
(b) This section shall not apply to any of the following:
(1) An unarmed uniformed guard or security personnel who is at the
polling place to cast his or her vote.
(2) A peace officer who is conducting official business in the
course of his or her public employment or who is at the polling place
to cast his or her vote.
(3) A private guard or security personnel hired or arranged for by
a city or county elections official.
(4) A private guard or security personnel hired or arranged for by
the owner or manager of the facility or property in which the
polling place is located if the guard or security personnel is not
hired or arranged solely for the day on which an election is held.

You as a voter can carry a firearm at a polling place generally.

Lets break this down into it's elements that we care about:

18544. (a) Any person in possession of a firearm...

who is stationed in the immediate vicinity of, or posted
at
, a polling place without written authorization of the appropriate
city or county elections official is punishable by...(a felony)

so if you are not stationed or posted...voting armed is NO CRIME in Ca (provided possession is otherwise lawful - ie: not in a government building or school zone etc...).

Hmmm...is 171b in effect at all polling places?

At the voting location after I voted a lady asked me why I had the sidearm. I simply stated "-So that I can protect you when you don't have the chance to". I got the thumbs up and "-Thank you"

I did.

Sat here at my desk and filled out my absentee ballot with a 9mm on my side.

Drove to the mailbox and dropped it in with a 9mm on my side.

Drove home with a 9mm on my side.

I did. I voted absentee this year. I was armed the whole time.

But even when I go to the polls, I always carry, even in the elementary school where the precinct polling place is. Perfectly legal (with my CCW permit). I love Utah!

Based on the wording you can go armed to the polling pace for early voting because it would not be a "election day".

I imagine they would consider any day there are polls open at the polling place an "election day". The law is probably worded that way to ensure that you can carry when polling is not going on, such as at my polling place, which is also a church.

Same here.

Nothing like sacrificing one right to be able to exercise another... :banghead:

1) Crimes can occur at the voting precint on election day.

2) Crimes can occur in churches.

3) Why should I be stripped of one right to excercise another?

There aren't magic force-fields around these locations. That's why I would "want'a."
Uh... CARRYING in polling places is a CRIME (here). I'll leave it in the truck.

I don't see any 'need' to carry a gun into the polling place. Not here anyway. (This is an unincorporated 'Open Range' area in the desert. I realize it's difficult for 'Back Easterners' to visualize whatthe high plains SW Sonora desert looks like... but it ain't 'the movies'... Google "Saguero National Park (west)" 'n take a look at my neighborhood. It ain't Columbus.... or Powder Springs... I'm even further west of the 'park' area. People talk about 'headin' for the hills' if the SHTF... Heh... This 'is' the hills.
