Eventhough I am American I lived in Canada for 12 years and their socialist government is of the opinion that the best defense is turn the other cheek. This story is very tragic andI can't even put it into words. However, I am proud to be American andproud of all of my freedoms, especially the right to protect myself and others.

It is unbelievable and unconscionable that all those people ran off the bus as fast as they could. it was just a knife. A couple guys (or girls) could have subdued that attacker with only moderate chance of mortal danger. What bothers me even more is that everyone seems to be making them out as heroes for keeping the criminal trapped in the bus. They should be scolded for not helping out when they could IMHO. Maybe the whole story hasn't been told, but it sure sounds fishy to me.

I really agree. While I can understand that the guy who got killed may have been completely taken off guard when he first got stabbed, the guy behind them or something should have been able to prevent a second or third stab.

There are some situations where I would be uncertain about drawing. This is not one of them.

While going to Canada, my brother was litteraly asked by a Canadian Border guard if he had any "self defense products". There is a reason I don't go to Canada anymore, and this is it. I haven't been there since 2001, and I doubt I'll ever go back.

I only go to take my 19 yr old friends drinking.

But this really highlights one of the main reasons I will probably never live in a country other than America. I just can't stand the thought of being disarmed. Not gonna happen.

Then don't make any plans in the near future to visit DC, CA, IL or WI, to name a few. :)

You out to be a Defense Attorney. Because it sounds a bit like a typical gun vs. knife argument. Have you ever seen how much damage can be done by a nut job wielding a knife? I have seen how much damage can be done in just 3 slashes of a knife and I'll tell you that my response to a knife attack is to aim and fire as many times as it takes to put the knife wielder down. The simple fact is that if a major artery is cut during a slashing you will die in about 3 seconds without effective treatment. I should also point out that effective first aid for a slashed corotid artery WILL cause brain damage because to stop the blood loss you also have to stop the blood flow to 1/2 of the brain. So I don't blame those on the bus for running one bit, edged weapons are just as dangerous as bullets.
