Residents Armed After Police Chief Fired

Some Brown County homeowners are arming themselves, because Higginsport officers aren't patrolling right now.

People who live in Higginsport say thieves have broken into their homes and stolen belongings since the mayor fired the police chief.

Now, Brown County Sheriff's deputies respond to 911 calls, but in some cases the response time isn't as fast.

Some residents have formed a Citizens on Patrol Group to help keep their homes and neighbors safe.

"We're putting motion lights up at some of the elderly people's houses because they're afraid that whoever is doing it is going to be hiding underneath the ramps," said Tina Updike, concerned homeowner. "And they're afraid they'll get attacked or something so we're doing what we can do."

Mayor Jason Kirschner says he followed the rules when he fired the chief and she was still in a probationary employment period.

He also says Tuesday, an officer who was out on medical leave will start patrolling again, possibly with an auxiliary officer.

This is a crappy situation for them to be in. But instead of whining and crying they are taking responsibility for their town and protecting each other. :celebrate

We live in a rural area of Ohio. We have always had the mindset that our personal safety is our responsibility. Looks like some city folks are doing the same. About time.

That's 90 people per square mile. Or 1 person for every 7 acres. I'd say that's rural. Hamilton county has 2,021 people per square mile. Or 1 person for 1/3 acre.
