The shooting death of Broward Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Reyka remains the only unsolved South Florida cop killing in nearly two decades.

The last in-the-line-of-duty slaying to go unsolved was the shooting death of Broward Sheriff's Deputy Patrick Behan, 29. He was killed outside a Pembroke Park convenience store in November 1990. A mentally retarded teen was convicted, but a judge later declared him innocent and the teen was released.

Other cases since 1990:

Feb. 17, 1990 Broward Sheriff's Deputy John "Jack" Greeney III, 47, was shot several times while responding to a report of a robbery outside Church's Fried Chicken in the 3300 block of West Broward Boulevard. The killer is on death row. An accomplice is serving a life sentence.

July 29, 1990 Pompano Beach Police Officer Scott Winters, 28, left a security detail at a strip mall to join his colleagues in searching for a rapist. Winters and a driver he pulled over on Hammondville Road got into a struggle, and the driver grabbed Winters' service weapon and fired. The killer is on death row.

June 11, 1991 Miami Springs Officer Charles Stafford, 28, was shot to death during a traffic stop involving a stolen car. A man was convicted in the case and sentenced to death, but last year a judge granted him a new trial that could start next month.

Jan. 3, 1992, North Miami Detective Sgt. Steven Bauer, 39, was shot during a bank robbery while working a security detail. Three men are on death row and a fourth is serving a life sentence.

Nov. 19, 1992 Hialeah police Sgt. Pedro Cainas, 34, died days after receiving a gunshot wound to the head while responding to a complaint involving a dispute between two neighbors. The shooter is serving 27 years in prison.

January 7, 1996 Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Bryant Peney, 27. was gunned down on South Federal Highway, in the city, by a man he had been chasing on foot. The shooter received a life sentence.

April 6, 2003 Broward Sheriiff's Deputy Philip Guy Billings, 25, was shot to death by thieves trying to steal wheel rims at a Coral Cadillac dealership near Pompano Beach. Billings was working a security detail at the dealership. Two suspects died in a murder suicide behind a strip mall west of Boca Raton.

Aug. 19, 2004 Broward Sheriff's Deputy Todd Fatta, 33, a member of the SWAT team, was shot to death while serving a child pornography warrant at a Fort Lauderdale home as part of a task force made up of local, state and federal investigators. The shooter is serving multiple life sentences.

Nov. 11, 2006 Broward Sheriff's Deputy Brian Tephford, 34, was shot to death during a traffic stop while working a security detail at Versailles Gardens condominiums in Tamarac. Three men have been charged in the shooting and are awaiting trial.

Sept. 13, 2007 Miami-Dade police Officer Jose Somohano, 37, was shot to death after pulling over a suspicious vehicle near Cutler Bay. Police shot and killed the suspect that night during a confrontation in Pembroke Pines.

Nov. 7, 2007 Broward Sheriff's Deputy Paul Rein, 76, was killed with his own handgun while escorting a prisoner, authorities said. The prisoner has been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial.,2655060.story
