Civilian vs citizen is a distinction that is often misunderstood.

Not really. Look it up in any dictionary and you'll see that the word "civilian" can also be used to distinguish people who are not members of police, fire departments, etc., not just those who are not members of military forces.

For example, a firefighter may call a soldier who he's pulling out of a burning building a "civilian" and be entirely correct. The meaning of the word depends on the context in which it's used.

Hmm. I could say that I'm all three. I'm ex-military, and I was a cop in the military so I'm ex-LEO. I'm now a civilian. I guess I'll pick that one.

Aren't all "free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years" members of thier respective State militias, and therefore not civilians? :) Yeah.. I'm reaching...
