How long have they been on the VCDL do not patronize list? I have been going there over a year with no problems. Today, for the first time, I was asked to put my gun in my car by a security guard. When I declined, he asked me to leave. After claiming the policy was posted "on the website," he mumbled something about contractual agreements and law, at which time I pointed out that Springfield Mall policy is not law. He then claimed to be a third year law student, and tried to explain that mall policy was, in fact, law.

As he escorted me out, I heard him on the radio, reporting that he had to "give a class on when mall policy becomes law." :quirky He also kept saying something into his radio about "CIA Agent Patrick Somebody" (I can't remember the name). I guess Springfield Mall Security works with the CIA.

Yeah, I know it's on the website. Like I said, they're on the VCDL "Do Not Patronize" list. I just didn't know it until now, because I'd never had a problem before. I'm not going to check the website of every place I visit just to see if they don't discriminate.

Well, it's not posted at any of their entrances...only having it online is discrimination against those who do not have internet access.

Write the manager, district, and regional managers of the stores you frequent, tell them you will no longer give them business due to this and copy the mall manager on it (and of course, give them the mall management information so they can complain as well).

Companies care about money, ESPECIALLY in a down economy! A few hundred bucks a year is 10's of thousands over your lifetime in lost revenues.

The best part is how it's always the security guys who act like they're dealing with some dangerous situation. Meanwhile, the proprietors of the establishments I patronize are more than happy to take my money. Somehow I don't think they'd be too happy to know that mall security is turning away customers who they are happy to have in their stores.

At one point, a guy in a cell phone company kiosk asked me if my gun was real. I stopped to explain OC, and he became quite interested, so I ended up giving him one of the Virginia OC "business cards" that I got from Ed. His coworker also wanted one, and so did a customer who had been standing around.

Thank god security stopped me in time! Otherwise, I might have handed out more OC cards before I left. :uhoh:

What can Mall Security do for you?

Springfield Mall's security team is committed to making your shopping experience the best it can be. Contact one of our security staff for assistance if you:

Locked your keys in your car. We can assist you with numbers for locksmiths.

Need assistance getting packages to your car.

Forgot where you parked.

Want an escort to your car.

Need complimentary wheelchairs.

Need Lost & Found services.

Our friendly security staff will be happy to assist you in whatever way they can.

Suggested Safety Tips

Shop with friends or relatives if possible.... there is safety in numbers.

Lock your purchases in the trunk of your car.

Never leave packages on the back seat or in a visible location.

Carry your most expensive purchases closest to your body.

Carrying too many packages at one time will make you an easy target. Have packages delivered to your home when possible.

Remember to retrieve your credit cards after making purchases.

Be alert in crowded places. Pickpockets' favorite places are revolving doors, crowded stores, elevators, public transportation and bus stops at rush hour.

Thieves often work in pairs: one will bump into you while the other picks your pocket or purse.

Use caution when using ATM machines. Always consider the time of day and location. Never exit with cash in your hands from the ATM.

If strangers are near your vehicle, return to the mall for assistance.

Have your keys out and be prepared to unlock your vehicle. Look inside your vehicle before entering it to be sure no one is hiding in the front or back seat.

If you are sitting in your car and somebody suspiciously approaches, drive away.

Lock your doors and windows when you get in and keep them locked.

This has been an intermittent issue at Springfield mall for a couple of years.

I carry openly there when I go. Never had an issue. Had a couple of clerks and some customers question me, but always friendly.

If you visit Springfield mall, you know it's only prudent to be carrying. Way too many robberies and shootings at that mall in the last few years.

As for their site: a former moderator once wrote "That's why I never OC when I visit their web site"

However, this is one place I disagree with mailing/sending notices. None of the entrances are posted, and only rarely will a security guard get snarky with OC. So when I have to go there (my preferred hairdresser works there, and if you've never had to find a new hairdresser, I envy you), I OC and take my chances. Notification of the ownership is likely to get signs posted, and then no one can OC there.

Yeah, the hysteria over guns creates the open carry ban on private property (the mall), but the shooter in Omaha last year didn't follow the rules when he carried a rifle into the mall there and killed a bunch of people.

Yesterday I went down to Georgetownand open carried -- no, NOT A GUN! I bought a pint of Everclear at Dixie Liquor, which no well-stocked liquor cabinet can be without, and which is not sold in Virginia. Then I decided the walk up to Barnes & Noble, a bit further down toward Foggy Bottom thanI had remembered. Walking through Georgetown with a pint of liquor in a paper bag gets a few :what:s. Good thing they didn't know it was Everclear. One pan-handler invited me to sit down.

WOW from some pictures it is a nice looking mall. too bad you got asked to leave.

Haha! I can tell you've never been here. The place is a dump. Half the retail spaces are vacant, and there was a rumor that the owners were trying to renovate it, since there are buckets of water all over the place whenever it rains. It's also a hangout for gangs and gangster wannabes. I only occasionally go there; the best thing about it was a Korean watch repairman who ran his own little shop with used pocketwatches and stuff, he was really good at what he did. I think his shop is closed, now, as is the movie house.

The best part is how it's always the security guys who act like they're dealing with some dangerous situation. This is a phenomenon of human behaviour. You put somebody in a uniform and tell him his job is important, and he starts to take it way too seriously and develops a complex about "how this place wouldn't get along without me" and so forth.
