Both are considered federal buildings. I have been warned by local police in Cody not to enter the library with a firearm.

    What???!!

That's got to be a joke. It's not the Library of Congress. "Considered" to be federal buildings? What does that mean? Either they are or they aren't, and that's the only consideration. And the local police won't be enforcing federal laws anyway. Are the library and DMV located in a federal courthouse or something? I highly doubt it.

In many, perhaps all, jurisdictions, libraries are government buildings, but they are LOCAL government. People need to check their local and state laws for carry status in such buildings.

I am a certified NRA handgun instructor in Wyoming. I also teach concealed carry.

There are no laws - not one word - on the the Wyoming statutes regarding open carry. There is also total preemption, so no city or county can make up a restrictive law.

Open carry is perfectly legal ANYWHERE not prohibited by FEDERAL law, such as Federal property. Private property may post their premisis as off limits.

I carry openly into the county courthouse, library, banks, stores and even the Sheriff's department. I do not carry into the US Post office or the US Forest Service building.

If you run into law enforcement people who do not understand this, you will do well to inform them gently and politely.

The rules are very different for concealed carry.

Be sure to research the state statutes for either carry before you act. Do not rely on the word of anyone alone.

Carry safely, often and everywhere you possibly can. It is that important.

So what can happen if I OC into a building and they had a sign that I didnt see that said carry wasn't allowed? Would I get charged with trespassing? because in some states, signs don't mean anything, you have to be asked by an employee to leave before you can get charged with trespassing.

I've been carrying here for about 3 years now. I've never even seen a "no guns" sign in Wyoming (except the Post office, of course) - so it is not really a problem here. I can't speak for the more socialist areas like Jackson Hole and Cheyenne, but you won't see that up here in God's country. <G>

The rules are probably different in other states, but I can't imagine you would have any problems here if there was a sign and you didn't see it. If someone approached you (employee) and asked you to leave, you'd just leave. The only way that would escalate to a charge of any kind would be if you refused, which would not be smart anyway.

If you practice common courtesy and are aware of your surroundings at all times, I can't imagine how you'd have any difficulty at all. So, relax and enjoy your freedom!
