Owning guns

Greetings all. I have some questions about owning guns, since I'm from New York, but live more in Virginia, kind of.

I'm currently in the military, Navy, and so I’m stationed in Virginia, but my legal residence is still New York. I wasn’t really interested too much in guns until I got to my ship, and there were people there who owned them, and went and shot them. So, now I’m looking to own 2 or 3 handguns, but I see that NY laws are fairly strict. Will being in the military and stationed in Virginia affect my ownership of hand guns? And are there restrictions on owning other types of weapons, besides machine guns, like rifles and things like semi-auto smg’s? Or, if there is a link somewhere to look up that info would be helpful.
Thanks :D

Well, apreciate the reply, but I don't live in the city, but more in southern Erie county, at the other end of the state. Also, whould I need to get a pistol permit since I would be living in Virginia and have the gun there?

Since I'm am in the military, I live in VA on a ship, and can get an appartment here, but still have my legal residentence as NY.

And since I live in VA, if I were to buy a pistol, would I have to register it in NY still? And I'm guessing the Florida CCW is covered in NY?

Your orders grant you residency in VA or whatever state you are sent.
Besure to have a copy of your orders when purchasing.

The problem you will have is if you plan to return (live in NY)

EDIT:
NY doesn't honor anyone's carry permit.
NYC doesn't honor anyone's carry permit to include NY.

I'm also military, stationed in VA--my home of record is Illinois.

I have a VA CHP....and have bought 5 or 6 guns since I've been here in VA.

I haven't told IL jack.

You do NOT have to tell NY anything...unless you plan on taking your guns back to NY. As long as you do not bring any guns back to NY, you do not have to do anything.

Edited to add: I know I sound repetitive...but there is no gun registration in VA and you do not have an obligation to adhere to NY laws when you live in VA--they just do not apply.

You are in the land of the free...

You do not have to notify NY of the ownership but if you intend to return to NY you must obtain a NYS pistol permit prior to bringing the pistols back. This can take up to 6 months. At the time of applying for the permit, you need to list the serial numbers of the handguns you wish to bring back with you. Hopefully you have the paperwork from VA from the purchase showing where/when you bought them. You can submit this with permit application. The alternative is you will have to have the pistols shipped to a gun dealer here which would then transfer them to you - for a fee of course. You must demonstrate custody of the pistol coming into NYS. When I moved here from Michigan, I used the registration permits I got from Michigan which listed make/model serial number. The alternative is the gun dealer. Being military doesn't matter, if you bring them into the state without a permit - military or not, you will be expected to surrender them until you get the permit. :)

Navy dude... You can buy anything ya want in VA... 'n NY can pound sand. Do yerself a favor... change your home of record anddeclare residencesomeplace other than NY unless you enjoy living inna Socialist Police State. I declared residency in 5 states (not all at once) when I was in the Navy for much the same reasons. If 'n when you get out... Go someplace other then NY. The Navy will pay yer freight to go there.
