I just got my new Sig p239 today. I was all excited to carry it, and then I realized I need a holster ;)

so, I haven't really decided yet if I will want to primarily OC or CC this guy yet, but my girlfriend will probably end up carrying it, and she will CC most of the time.

I was thinking something OWB, that could conceal fairly easily, with decent retention (not necessarily a thumb break though).

Any suggestions?

I have a sig p239 as well. I only have a conceal carry holster right now, I'm looking for an open carry holster. For concealment, the Crossbreed super tuck deluxe is a great holster that is quite comfortable. I highly recommend it.

Anyone know of a good open carry holster for the sig p239?

Well, due to the overwhelming response to this thread, I decided to buy a holster.

I got a Bianchi Minimalist, seen here: http://www.bianchi-intl.com/product/Prod.php?TxtModelID=105

It sits nice and high, and keeps the gun close to my body. The p239 prints a bit, but I don't really care about that.

ETA: I could switch to OC by just tucking in my shirt. I think this would still be comfortable, and this holster comes with an elastic strap to provide some retention. This really only works if your gun has a hammer.

The Minimalist is a fine choice.

I began carrying around 1995 and my first handgun was a SIG P-239. They were fairly new at the time. I first selected leather holsters from various makers, including:
Bianchi: http://www.bianchi-intl.com/
Desantis: http://www.desantisholster.com/
Don Hume: http://www.donhume.com/
Galco: http://www.usgalco.com/
Milt Sparks: http://www.miltsparks.com/
Wild Bill's Concealment: http://www.wildbillsconcealment.com/

There are many fine leather holster makers out there. I kept trying things until I found something comfortable, functional and durable.

I shoot left handed, or I did until a couple of weeks ago when an injury put my left hand out of commission for a time. Lefty holsters are harder to come by, so I generally special ordered them. Takes forever, but worth it, in my opinion. You didn't mention left or right, so I assume you're right-handed. Righties have more options and you're more likely to find something suitable off the shelf or in stock at a gun store or show. Some holsters, particularly the Kydex variety noted below, don't even come in left-handed versions.

A couple of years ago, I gave some Kydex holsters a try. Kydex is a thermo-formed or injection molded plastic. While I had a leather preference because I thought it looked cool, most of the time I conceal carry, so nobody sees it anyway. Leather does wear over time and even the finest leather holsters need to be replaced every few years.

I became a Kydex convert, so currently, I carry in Kydex holsters from:
Blade Tech: http://www.blade-tech.com/home.php
Uncle Mike's: http://www.uncle-mikes.com/
and others. Kydex offers very fast presentation (draw) and seems to last forever. Kydex is also much more economical than leather.

If you desire the speed of Kydex and the look of leather, Fist, http://www.fist-inc.com/ makes a series of leather holsters with a Kydex liner.

While we're at it, let me put in a word for a *very* stiff belt. It may seem counter-intuitive that a very stiff belt would be more comfortable than a softer one. Not so. The stiff belt holds lots of weight and offers a comfortable, stable platform for the holster and all the other stuff you are likely to carry on the belt (spare magazines, flashlight, cell phone, etc.) A J Concealco, http://www.concealco.com/ offers great stiff belts. I'm wearing one now with a SIG P-220 in a Blade Tech Kydex holster, 2 spare magazines (Uncle Mike's Kydex) and a cell phone. Its comfortable enough to wear all day long.

Hope this helps. You said you were new to the P-239, but you didn't say whether you were a new gun owner, or not. I do see you have a couple of hundred posts, so forgive me if I belabored anything obvious here.

Just for the record, I have no stake in any of the makers noted above. I recall how much time (and money) I invested in trying to figure this stuff out and find things like holsters, magazine pouches and belts. Perhaps this will be of some help. There is an article I wrote on holster selection a couple of years ago for The Defender, VCDL's roughly quarterly publication. Link is here: http://www.vcdl.org/defender/Vol7Issue1c.pdf

Remember to check out the selections from our new forum sponsors Tucker Gun Leather and Crossbreed Holsters, both of which make holsters for the P239.
