When I went to the desk sargeant at my towns PD I was as polite as I could be. the guy gave me a long look over when I asked "Could I please have an application for pistols and revolvers". He got the forms and handed them to me and hesitated for a second or tow and then said "when you get this all filled out, signed and notarized call this number to set up an appointment for the background check" I thanked him very much and walked out.
I went in there with the confidence that I wasn't asking for something I wasn't entitled to get, like a dog license or something else mundane.
The detective that took my prints and went over the paperwork with me on the day was young and pretty easy going. We joked about how funny it would be if he ran my name/dob and came back with a warrant. He said "I'm not going to see anything bad in there am I??" so I said "You shouldn't see anything at all!" and he didn't so that made it all the more amusing. I said "It would be pretty stupid to come in here voluntarily for something like this and get arrested on the spot wouldn't it?" he said "You'd be surprised"
It's all in the past now, I'm just waiting for my Utah permit to arrive which for the $100 class and $65 fee opens up 30 states to me so I can go out west and visit with my buddy and we can go have some fun like proper cowboys.

That was 5 years ago, and I remember not really questioning anything of the process because the Department basically made you feel like you were asking them to arrest you for even thinking of getting a permit.
