Russian media reported on Monday that the naval group could be larger and more heavily-armed than realised in the West and could make unexpected ports of call.



"The Russian warships will be followed by anti-submarine airplanes and nuclear-powered submarines with missiles on board," Russia's Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily said on Monday. It gave no further details.



Another Russian daily, Izvestia, said that on their way to Venezuela, the Russian flotilla will detour through the Gibraltar Strait and into the Mediterranean, where U.S. navy vessels are also deployed.

As somebody from the State Department said, "It's nice they could find some ships that could make it this far." I'll bet a few can even make the trip back. And those that sink through lack of maintenance and incompetent ship handling can be artificial reefs.

And the neutering of our military might not play a part in this (thank you BJ Clinton)? We need to take this threat seriously, as many of us have seen the drunken bully get a couple of good licks in and sometimes actually win the fight. One drunken bully, one young gangster wanting to make a name for himself by taking on the champ (Chavez vs USA) and then there's the opportunist that gets his kicks in while he's standing in the shadow (insert unfriendly country here) could turn ugly for us; and then who can we turn to for help? Mexico??? Canada (though they would be here for moral support as Russia crosses through their territory)??? We need leaders who will be willing to sink their ships and call it a "warning".

I've made two dives off the coast of NC, where we took pictures of 2 different U-Boats. Both had huge gaping holes in them.

Now, How, Why ? were those submarines there in the first place ? Never heard that on the news during WWII .....

Yeah, there were Kriegsmarine U-Boats off the eastern seaboard during WWII. They preyed on merchant ships going to Britain and the Soviet Union.

As for these Russian naval exercises, these aren't anything more provocative than what other countries - including the US - regularly do. Also, IIRC, territorial waters extend only to 20 miles or so (Wankipedia says 12 miles - whatever) from the coast, so the waterways in question aren't "ours" if the article is correct. Especially considering that Russia already has ICBMs with MIRV capability, they don't need to get anywhere near us to pose a grave threat if they care to.

Exactly. The US military is ALL over the world. Who reached down out of the sky and proclaimed that we're the only ones allowed to do that? It's good to see the Russians are joining the world police party. Maybe it'll put the stupidity of US foreign policy into perspective for the American people... but probably not. Everyone will assume, just as the OP did, that Russia is trying to take over the world.Ignorant Americans FTL. :banghead:

Sinking Peter the Great would be the biggest naval event since the General Belgrano went down in the Falkland/Malvinas.

What we should do is send183 Barrett .50 Cal sniper rifles to Georgia with lots of incendiary rounds and wishes for happy hunting of all Russian POL trucks in South Ossettia. 183 is the hull number of Peter the Great.

Easy Stylez. The maneuvers are in response to our presence in Poland, and they involve a country whose leader is overtly hostile to US policy and democracy in general. Our presence in Poland might not be the most diplomatic move, but this activity with Venezuela is a bit more than a veiled threat.

Being of Cuban roots, I have enough to fear when it comes so socialism/communism.

Just for your information, Georgia is the one who started the conflict. Saakashviliwas acting like a drunk bully in the bar and Russia had to react. Good 75% of South Assetians are Russian citizens and starting a genocide against them couldn't go unanswered. Imagine if Cuba attacked Panama or Bahamas - do you think US would not react militarily? Don't get me wrong - i am no fan of Putin and his team and i think that almost all of their policies, both internal and foreign had been wrong, but in this case that wasn't really Russia's fault. The other question is thatwhat Georgia did in South Assetia was pretty much the same crime against people that Russia's beendoing in Chechnya and noone in this story is really clean...neither isUS with Iraq for that matter. It's all politics which start these wars and it is a tragedy that a lot of people become victims of someone's political interests.

As for the whole "lets sink their flagship" talk, don't forget that Russia still has 2ndlargest nuclear arsenal in the world and sinking Russian military ship in internationalwaters could be a big mistake. Also, no matter how much Putin wants to play these crazy games and show his fake strength (mostly to distract attention ofRussian citizens from internal economical problems), he also knows that US has the 1st largest nuclear arsenal and any REAL confrontation would be aloose-loose situation for pretty much the whole planet. Thats the best feature of having nukes - no matter how much politics heat up, it keeps both parties from getting into a real conflict. At that point,comparing Russian armed forces thatareinterrible shape and practicallyunable to defend themselves to US military - undoubtedly the strongest armed forces in the world, really doesnt make that much sense...
