Moms pack many things—endless lunches, bottles, diapers, snacks, toys, wipes, overdue library books, and of course kids.
But does a responsible mom also pack a gun?
The question was recently raised on the website BabyCenter, which chronicles all things motherhood, from conception to inconceivably picky eaters and back-talking three year olds.
On the site, a mom blogger described the terrifying experience of a mother who was attacked at home in a safe neighborhood by a rapist with a gun. The woman fought, the attacker fled, and the blogger posed a question: “Do you think that every mother should own a gun?”
The point-blank debate about point-blank defense revealed that some moms are packing heat.
“I carry a Keltec 380 (small pistol) on my hip everyday,” revealed a mother of a one year old and a two year old. “I feel comfortable knowing that I will be able to defend my kids and I if we are in a life-threatening situation.”
Another mother—eight months pregnant and with a toddler—wrote that her husband works the night shift, and “our gun is the only way I could defend myself and my children should someone intend to do us harm.”
And there was this disclosure from a police officer mom: “I keep a loaded 9mm in my Coach diaper bag.”
Suddenly, it seems, mothers with guns are everywhere—movie star moms included. Recent news reports quote actress Angelina Jolie as saying she keeps a gun at home for security, and that “if anybody comes into my home and tries to hurt my kids, I’ve no problem shooting them.”
Tell us what you think: Should a mother’s responsibility to protect her children include having a gun?

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn a ban on handguns.
Gun ownership is a very controversial issue — and personally, I’m up in arms about it.
Last week, a man with a gun walked into the home one of my close friends and tried to rape her. My friend — who lives in a comfortable, family-friendly neighborhood — fought back with her bare arms.
What matters right now, at this moment, is that my friend saved everyone. She fought back, and screamed for her daughter and boyfriend to run. The man ran off, too. In our community, she is a hero.
the Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting.
Outside the U.S., people seem alarmed by the number of guns your average U.S. citizen has. Are you?
The D.C. Mayor expressed disappointment, warning that, “More handguns will lead to more handgun violence.”
But one mother I know says that banning gun ownership will not stop violent crime. She is in the process of buying a gun.
There’s another single mom who owns a gun, belongs to a private shooting range, and wants to be prepared to defend herself — and her kids.
Personally, I agree with Simone Green at BlogHer.com that this is “an absolute disaster.
Your turn. What do you think?
Please, let’s remember to respect each other’s thoughts as we voice our opinions. Thank you.

My view is this. The Second Amendment wasn't writtenfor criminals, crackheads, or gang members. Most of them can't even read, much less, care what it says.

From what I get from all the media sources, those described individuals are thevery ones commiting virtually ALL the violent crime in D.C.To think that they could give a rip about any gun law would be no less than idiotic.

If they did happen to have any working cells left in their head to think with, I would imagine they would be a lot more selective about who they preyed upon since this"NEW" law went into effect.

I applaud the Supreme Court's landmark decision and encourage every law abiding citizen whodesires a gun to defend themselves when the unthinkable happens, to excorcise that right to do so.

Including, if not especially, MOM'S.

I love it !! You Go Girls !!

just a little off subject, She's not a mom yet, But someday it's sure to happen.I was talking to one of my nieces the other day at a family gathering, she's 16 very pretty, very smart, and has hunted and killed several Turkeys and Deer this far in life, her Dad(my Bro.) is all about hunting and fishing, and all outdoors, except handguns for Defense Carry. I brought up the subject of Getting her a pistol for graduation Next year,

Me: Hey Jessica when ya want to start shooting pistols?

her:what do I want to start shooting pistols for?

Me: well you can hunt with them, and it wouldn't hurt to have one handy incase you get into a questionable situation someday and you feel you life may be in danger..

Her: I ain't afraid of anything out in the woods.

Me: well in Missouri that most likely won't be a problem, but in missouri civilization which is out where all the dangerous wild animals live you could be confronted with a life or death situation someday, and wouldn't you feel better off prepared for a situation before the moment of truth instead of being a victim and later on thinking about all of the "What If's"..

WHOA!!

then My brother pipes up and says Thats enough about pistols,She don't need a handgun, and I'll take care of any situation she gets into.

Me: You ain't gonna be in her hip pocket forever Dad! and I think you should start teaching her about handguns, self defense, and protecting herself when your not around!

Bro: You're not getting her a handgun! Thats It!!

So do I back off or keep talking to my little bro. about this obviously sensative situation??

Do not try to confuse your brother with facts and logic. His mind is already made up that his little princess will never come to any harm - ever!

On the other hand, you might have some conversations with your neice where you discuss self-protection and self-defense. Let her lead you to the conclusion that having a handgun might be better than a set of car keys or a can of hairspray. Maybe give her a subcsription to Women and Guns http://www.womenandguns.com/ as the next present she gets from you.

Send her to http://www.womenandguns.com/, http://www.clipper.net/~nancyw/firearms/women.html]http://web.archive.org/web/20021028012628/ , http://www.clipper.net/~nancyw/firearms/women.html[/url], http://www.paxtonquigley.com/, and http://www.io.com/~cortese/firearms/index.htmlfor some entertaining reading on the web.

Then sit back and watch to see if she begins to get the point. If she does, go make some popcorn and watch as she has a few "discussions" with her dad about handguns. Have your $$ saved up so you can gift her with her first handgun as soon as she says she wants/needs one.

stay safe.

Remind your brother that there are no gaurantees in life.

There's no gaurantee, that the next time he leaves home to go to work, that he'll see home agian.

There's no gaurantee that he'll benear bywhen his daughter needs his protection form a rapist or murder.

There are NO GAUARNTEES.........

Get my drift?

Problem is that your brother will be "taking care of it" after the fact. How is he going to undo a rape and beating to take care of it? My fiancee and I have gone around and around about this but she if finally seeing the light that if we ever have a daughter she WILL have and know how to shoot a handgun well, she WILL understand that there are evil people in the world and she WILL be supported if and when she would ever decide to carry for personal defense.
