GREEN BAY — How easy is it to acquire a gun? The National Rifle Association is a strong gun lobby whose argument is that the Constitution gives us the right to own a gun. Back in those days, there wasn't much of a police force and citizens had to defend themselves. NRA used to mean National Recovery Administration instead of a powerful gun lobby.

More people are killed every day in this country than in both wars in a week. Are we secretly trying to cut down on the population?

Self-protection? Carry a pistol like in the old days of the Wild West and shoot it out? If a burglar invaded your house and you knew he was there, how long would it take you to unlock your gun case? How long would it take to load it? Assuming the burglar was armed, who would win the battle?

Hunters are a different matter, although this hobby can be dangerous.

The number of amazingly ignorant people armed with a keyboard and mouse scare me right now, considering the responses I've read. There are a number of good arguments listed, but the number of ignorant people who wish to be "protected" by their elected masters is scary.

opusd2, don't worry yet, they'll all be at the polls soon voting for a liberal super-majority in the senate and a socialist executive branch. Then we can worry.

If I hear one more "wild west" catch phrase....

Also, when did shooting people become an acceptable form of birth control?
Finally,I believe the Supreme Court just reiterated in Heller that people have the right to own firearms.

Edit: changed Hamden to Heller.

The woman who wrote this is a moron who knows nothing about firearms or the 'citizens' who choose to own them. People like her should come to events such as Helldorado in Tombstone, AZ for an 'education' on hundreds of people openly bearing arms of all kinds amidst 'women and children. (Many women being so armed themselves) She'd freak!

She's one of the sheep who will forever remain a sheep. She doesn't know any better... and doesn't care to know. Baaaa!

Unfortunately it may then be too late. I just find it so hard to understand why someone would just vote for someone without considering their past and voting history. And how can a person not see the elusive tactics attempting to lure everyone to their side, and pushing early voting so you can't change your mind when a formidable backer comes into play(Brady), that's just ignorant.

I've come to accept that the world is harsh and that I will need to protect those I love from the wrong all around us. Although that may be difficult, I'd rather work a little to understand my environment and all of the hurtful elements within than to give up rights just to feel "safe" because there is yet another law designed to remove our burden of choice - to outlaw a possibility of something that may or may not happen by denying our ability to make a conscious effort to do the right thing. But I guess the ability to be self-reliant and morally strong is an antiquated and politically incorrect way of living.

Call me old fashioned, but I'm willing to put everything on the line to protect those I love and will do whatever is necessary. Having just become a first time parent, the need to defend my family and our freedom from living in tyranny has become stronger than I ever imagined. I don't look to anyone else to fight my battles, and the voting booth is one of the last places I look for guidance. It's sad to say but it's so true. And maybe since my encounters with LE haven't always been rosy, perhaps that is why I am a bit jaded - I don't like seeing LE take care of their own while we the people who are supposed to be their reason for having a job in the first place cannot depend on them as we need to. Perhaps we all know those who are in the system and have brazenly disobeyed and broken the laws they were hired to enforce, yet when these actions are brought to light it eventually gets neatly swept under the rug.

Being old enough to remember living in a world before widespread implementation of the 911 system while growing up in the sticks on a farm, I was raised to understand how necessary it was to take charge of my own life and protect my own. It's something I plan on passing down to my kids and hoping they pass it down after I'm gone. Whether or not it makes them an "outlaw" like I sometimes feel I am, remains to be seen. So be it.

The point I am trying to make here is that the current political climate scares the tar out of me. Sheeple blindly voting for someone who claims to be different than the current administration just because the popular opinion is that the current Chief is responsible for all that is wrong with our country while conveniently forgetting all of the blatant lies and attempt to impeachment his predecessor and that the person advocating "Change" believes in an even greater degree of control by restricting the rights of his constituents. Is one candidate better than the other? I guess it depends on what kind of history you plan on making. Or erasing.

I guess I should point out that I do realize that I sound like I am ranting sometimes. Perhaps I'm not as informed on the topics as I think I am, or perhaps I am just passionate about freedom of choice and get angry when I feel like I'm losing more and more freedoms everyday. Part of it all is fear, I guess. Like all of the work I do to retain that personal freedom and attempts to open the eyes of those following the tide of society is for naught. But at least I know what I stand for.

This is a great way to express opinions and share information, if anything this forum serves as reinforcement to an individual's ideas that we are not alone in our desire to seek change in the way we are allowed to live our lives separately from collective bodies.

Perhaps the worst thing anyone can do for themselves is to have a right then lose it. At that point you recognize just how much it means to you. Even the passage of time and changing of social attitudes are very recognizable and anyone exercising their rights will notice their eventual demise or threat of demise.

Is ignorance bliss? For some perhaps, but everyone has the responsibility to themselves and their children to protect the future from the erosion of sensibility. I refuse to be complacent about 2nd A rights, because it's also a good indicator of other individual rights. I've tried educating family and friends (as well as neighbors) of what I consider to be freedom of choice and self reliance, and am often met with resistance. Still it's a task I don't take lightly, and will continue to fight.

With gun deer hunting season coming up, I am raring to go. There are still the neighbors who are a PITA and who encroach upon my stand, but I am well within my rights to be where I want as long as I am safe. And considering I took numerous safety courses over the years for one reason or another, I have training many other hunters in my area don't. Does this make me a better shot or hunter? Not necessarily, but it does make me a bit more informed and proactive in my life.

I too have tried writing the Advocate regarding negative attitudes about hunting and gun ownership, but have as of yet have not been published. But until my voice is heard I will keep trying with the hopes of educating others with what is published in law books and written into the bill of rights as inalienable.
