I thought I read somewhere in the washington forum that it was illegal for local government to outlaw carry, whether open or otherwise, in public parks. am I losing my mind or does the state law override the local?

You are correct. Any local law that says that guns are banned has been preeempted by state law. You will still see signs in the parks, but the municipal codes and others are unenforceable.

The FAQ's cover that. Washington State has total preemption over municipal firearms laws, excepting muncipalities can pass laws regarding discharge, excepting self defense.

My truck just caught on fire and I was just forced to register my guns with the base but that put a smile on my face.

Does anyone who works on/around the base/fort know of a procedure for those who carry when off the base/fort? I'm curious if there is a better option than 'leave it at home'.

Hey, the sign says "No Loitering". Time to haul you all in. :D
Actually, we weren't loitering, we were posing for a picture, then left the area. If they hauled us in, they'd have to haul in the Wedding Party that was not 100 feet away from us that were in the same place taking pictures for the duration of our picnic... I'm sure that would go over well in the media.

The 10 people there were just those that were carrying and decided to join in the picture at the time. There were others that had attended and had left already or weren't carrying... overall amounting to more than 15 people. I think we had between 15-20 people in attendance at any one time, but since I came late, I don't know how many people showed overall.

That would be a PR nightmare for PPD.

Puyallup HRT Arrests Men, Women and Children at a Local Picnic for Doing Nothing Illegal

Somehow, I don't think they'd like to see that headline in ANY newspaper.

This is completely off-topic of the original post but...

Military bases typically give you a bit of a hassle if you are coming and going on/off base with any firearm other than your duty weapon if you are an MP/SP/SF/ASF and have a reason to leave the base with your weapon.

It's always a bit of red-tape at the gate to go through. Most of them will allow you through with your weapons unloaded, actions open, and in cases so long as you proceed directly to their armory and check them in. Usually they won't escort you to the armory but sometimes they do. Checking them out is the same in reverse, you head directly to the main gate actions open, unloaded, and cased.

The problem is that your schedule has to match the normal business hours of the armory if you want to move your firearms around and that usually means you'd late for watch/duty. Sadly, the best option is to just leave them at home unless there's a safe and secure place to park your vehicle near the base.

Something you might consider, is that the military's view is that you are technically on duty 24/7. Hence it never hurts to have a letter of permission to carry when not on post. If, God forbid, something should happen and you have permission, then you are covered. Your medical will cover you and they can not charge you for not being able to report for duty. It will also protect you from civilian authorities to some extent too. I had a letter of permission to drag race off base, the military views this as a dangerous activity, and when I broke an arm in a fall at a race, I was covered. I would think the military would consider OC or CC as a dangerous activity if drag racing is one.
