I think you've got it. The Founders thought it utter folly to think that The People would believe there was no god. They rejected the thought completely. Not only that, they insisted that the god of your choice would be considered greater than man, not below or equal.

Pick any god you want, if we have the courage to enforce it, it's in the 1st Amendment.
