Do you know of any CA cops with (likely) illegal unreg'd AWs/50BMGS?

(Crossposted from Calguns and ARFcom: thanks for hearing me out... sticky perhaps?)
  • PLEASE DIRECT ALL RESPONSES VIA EMAIL TO ME AT 'wmwiesejr@yahoo.com'
  • PLEASE ENTER "[PROJECT-58]" IN YOUR EMAIL 'SUBJECT'
  • PLEASE DON'T REPLY TO THIS (nor PM me about this) EXCEPT FOR ANY CLARIFYING QUESTIONS.
It appears there are quite a few cops spread around the state who own what
are most likely unregistered/unpermitted (thus illegal) CA-defined assault weapons
and/or 50BMG rifles.

Surprisingly, these situations are not necessarily clustered in 'rural' or 'Northern'
or 'Central Valley' cities/ counties. It appears quite a few cops and sheriff's deputies
have thought they were exempt from RR or SB23 or 50BMG registration requirements,
and/or are confusing the parameters of the now-sunset Federal 1994 AW ban from
the CA bans.

For a variety of reasons, knowing the number of such miscreants within the city or
county will be very, very helpful to us.

AT THIS POINT I DON'T WANNA GET INTO A FINGER-POINTING GAME, "Officer
X in Dept Y has unreg'd guns 1,2,3...". This is NOT about the individual cop in
question
(unless he were to bust a legit OLL guy, etc.)

NOTE ALSO: THIS REGARDS LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL ONLY (
primarily
Police & Sheriff deputies only, but CHP or other state agency LE groups' officer
could be useful too.)

[RIGHT NOW, I DON'T CARE IF A POLITICIAN OR NOTABLE OR OTHER
non-LEO POSSESSES ILLEGAL AWs: THAT WON'T HELP US IN THIS
PARTICULAR SITUATION/STRATEGY.
]

What I need:
  • no name, just knowing cop vs. sheriff and which department/county;
  • is this a personal gun, or perchance an issued/departmental gun?
  • overall type/style of rifle (AR, AK, HK, FAL, Uzi, SKS w/detach. mag, etc.)
including configured features suite. Make/model is important. If you're
unsure about a specific aspect/feature, do please say so: for example,
flash hiders vs. brakes can be difficult to differentiate. Please try to be
as accurate (specifics) as possible. Be aware of NFA issues (shorty SBRs,
SBSes) as well. If you suspect an unreg'd 50BMG rifle, do note/report
on that as well - it's in the same league as an AW.
  • grounds for belief the gun is an AW (known banned make/model, saw
it up close during use at range, handled it yourself, etc.) as opposed to
a non-AW (say, manually cycled OLL or fixed-mag OLL). Please ensure
you're properly differentiating between a legit OLL rifle vs. a true AW.
Please describe any element/aspect of which you're uncertain.
  • anything the cop said to you directly (or within earshot) about 'being
special', not having to register AWs due to LE status, lack of chance of
    being arrested/charged/prosecuted/disciplined, etc.
Remember, the purpose of this is to get a count/idea of the scale of the issue,
and the localities involved - and not to get an individual cop in trouble.

I do not see any issues coming back at you as an individual for sending me an
email about this. This is being dealt with on a 'bulk' scale for now. [Utlimately
we could (already) make an example of a couple of officers if folks reporting
these issues to me were hassled, but I simply don't expect this to happen.]

AGAIN, THIS IS NOT ABOUT GOING AFTER COPS. THIS IS ABOUT GOING
AFTER A BAD STATEWIDE SITUATION REGARDING AWs.

I WANT TO THANK THE FOLKS THAT HAVE REPLIED TO ME PRIVATELY
ALREADY. YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND LEVEL OF DETAIL IN REPORTING
OF ITEMS & BEHAVIORS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED AND GIVES ME
GREAT FAITH IN CALIFORNIA GUNNIES...

He did indeed originally ask for a PM...I chose to reply instead.

No. But I leave you to think of the untenable legal and political situation caused by over a thousand cops throughout the state being ongoing felons - or at least felons for some fair fraction of their CA career since 1990.

BTW: It prob doesn't matter if these cops are charged/convicted, either.

I do thank you for your reply.

I'd appreciate if you edited your orig reply to me.

I had indeed asked for private regular email response to me and not PMs or replies here (except for clarification questions) - so external forces reading this don't cause folks unneeded trouble and we can get the results we want. There's a lot of politics in play here.

And what situation is that, precisely? A situation where the police continue on not arresting themselves for possession of weapons they know to be illegal, perhaps? How does any benefit for us come into play?

Not trying to be rude, I'm asking out of pure ignorance here.

Please believe me that this is significant leverage, but I don't wanna tilt my hand here.

I don't understand why, but many people see this as a bad thing.

"Why piss off the cops?"

They keep records on us and work with their professional support organizations to take our guns and rights away while they secretly sit there with their illegal actions and guns claiming "special priviledge" because they are buddy buddy with a DA.

I say that we get this information and keep it in our pocket until such time we need their involvement in sponsorship of more gun-friendly laws. :celebrate
