Sorry amlevin, but I disagree with you 100%.
I have bought two firearms out of state and payed only $15 for the long-gun and $20 for the pistol for transfer fees. Shipping was around $25 for each.
I bought the rifle for $620 and the pistol for $420. Since sales tax is around 10% here, you're looking at ~$62 for the rifle and ~$40 for the pistol... and that doesn't include if they want to charge me for the transfer.
Sounds to me like you're just not shopping around very well for the best price on an FFL transfer dealer.
Perhaps your scenario would save money if you shop over the internet or by phone. If you have to make a trip to physically inspect the weapon then where is the savings. Last I looked gasoline was still expensive (although going down rapidly).
I buy mostly new guns and have found the prices I paid to be very close to those available online.
In short, to each his own but be sure to add up ALL the expenses. Don't forget that even though you may only consider the price of gasoline in your driving expenses there is also that for maintenance, tires, and insurance. The average mileage expense when EVERYTHING is included is over $0.40 per mile.
