FBI Reports Shawano County Leaders/Residents Threatened

From heavy security at the Shawano City Council meeting to a police escort for the mayor, a community is on high alert. A city alder confirms the FBI is investigating implied threats against city and county officials.

"They basically they said you're on a list, have a good day. Now we have to worry about one more thing in our lives,"

An FBI investigation led to a warning about a threat against dozens of people.

Shawano Alder Bob Kurkiewicz says the FBI warned community leaders that a religious organization just outside of Shawano has made implied threats against them.

The group, run by a man known as Dr. Samanta Roy, has had a contentious relationship with people in the Shawano area for years. Kurkiewicz says it has now escalated to threats against roughly 60 people.

Action 2 News has information that the implied threats are against everyone from the mayor to city council members to even the police chief.

The alder we talked with says the threats are not specific but no one here is taking any chances.

At Wednesday night's city council meeting, not a word was mentioned about the FBI investigation and the mayor had no comment for the media.

Mayor Lorna Marquardt was surrounded by police officers as she left the meeting.

"We're taking some extra, precautionary measures to make sure nothing does happen," Police Chief Ed Whealon said. "We don't know, but we're just going ahead, take a little more precautionary measures."

Chief Whealon wouldn't talk about the specifics of the situation.

The FBI released a statement:

"The FBI made a public announcement to 60 potential victims in Shawano, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, November 5th. The FBI advised these individuals that they were potential victims of an implied threat that was discovered as part of an ongoing investigation."

Kurkiewicz confirmed there are references to the religious organization.

"Are they saying that's who's leveling the threats?" we asked.

"That's correct," Kurkiewicz said. "That's who they have been monitoring."

That group's representative was at the city meeting, photographing city council members and members of the media.

She had no comment and put her hand in front of our camera.

Kurkiewicz says people are on edge and have changed their routines.

Their concern level "is heightened. That's what they want us to be. They want us to be more vigilant in our daily activities but to go on and carry on with our daily activities," he said.

The FBI says it continues to investigate the situation and will reveal more information in the future.

We started this website not about SIST but to give you a flavor of our hometown of Shawano. Because of the large shadow that local events have brought over the future of our town, we would like to bring out into the open the facts surrounding the conflict between mayor Lorna Marquardt and local businesses.

The Samanta Roy Institute of Science & Technology was founded and is headed by Dr. R. C. Samanta Roy, a naturalized American citizen originally from India. The goal of this non-profit organization is to establish a world-class educational institute in the Shawano area.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Samanta Roy has experienced many instances of racial discrimination at the hands of Shawano city officials and local people. This prejudice and discrimination has intensified since the founding of SIST more than a decade ago, especially since its purchase of various businesses in the Shawano area starting about five or six years ago. These businesses are for the purpose of raising capital to fund the building and maintenance of the educational institute here in Shawano. Incidentally, they are some of the best establishments in town, and you can see some of them under our favorite places page.

Rather than welcoming such an American spirit and dream for their economically depressed town, Shawano town officials have reacted by doing everything in their power to hinder and obstruct the beneficial things that SIST is trying to do. The following will give you an idea of the events that have shaped the current conflict over the past several years.

We began this website to tell the good (and bad) things about our hometown of Shawano, Wisconsin. Recent events, however, have changed our view of how this town operates, and have made it impossible not to share with you the unbelievable events of the last years and months, a small proportion of which are only now being uncovered and coming to light. To provide a proper perspective, one needs to have a general idea of the people who live here and run this town. A statistical overview of the population shows that 89% of the population is White and nearly 8% Native American. That leaves other races in the smallest minority. While overall, only 2.5% of the US population is Lutheran, in Shawano this religious denomination comprises 38% of people with religious affiliations. Roman Catholics make up 26%, thus the majority of the Shawano population is White Lutherans and Catholics. The German Lutherans and Catholics who settled northern Wisconsin (Shawano and Wausau) are religious descendants of Martin Luther and biological cousins of the same German Lutherans and Catholics who in World War II murdered six million Jews and millions of others who didn't fit their mold. Is it any surprise that these people are using the same tactics today in the USA to harm and discredit those who are different from them? Wausau's Channel 7 WSAW, a CBS affiliate, together with Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt and staff of the Shawano Leader newspaper, have teamed up to produce a multi-part television series called "Secrets in Shawano", purportedly to shed light on the activities of "...an extreme religious group in Shawano and their history and impact on the community." SIST has been operating in Shawano for how many years, and now they suddenly decide to make a big commotion: Why? For what purpose? What is their intention here? These are some of the questions we will explore in the next pages and additions to the site, and will provide information and facts that we guarantee you will have a hard time finding elsewhere. This WSAW series, in fact, is a concerted attempt to discredit and harm the businesses owned by SIST. SIST has purchased and operates a number of businesses in Shawano for the purpose of raising funds to build an international school of science and technology in the Shawano area.
