I thought guns weren't allowed on mall property???

Sadly I think more problems are going to arise thanks to layoffs and the economic climate

WASHINGTON—Fairfax County police say a shooting has taken place at Tyson's II Galleria Saturday. The shooting happened shortly after 12:30p.m.
Police say they shot an armed man near Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant.
Officer Shelly Broderick with Fairfax County police, says the man failed to obey the commands of the officers to put his weapon down. "He made a movement and one officer discharged one round," she says.
The suspect was shot in the lower body and taken to a local hospital. His injuries are described as serious.
Police have not released the identity of the man.
NBC/Channel 4 is reporting the man is a former employee of Maggiano's who was recently fired from the restaurant.
When he returned to the restaurant today, employees described the man as acting strange and called police.

Saw the story on the news.

Apparently he was a new employee at Maggiano's, and quit after working only part of his shift, stating that he "could not take it." I don't recall them stating that he had been fired, but who looks to thenews for total accuracy.

He came back later and sat at the bar, acting agitated, according to staff.

They had mall security escort him out, and (fortunately) also called the cops due to his behaviour.

He walked out to his car, got a gun, started walking back, and that's when the cops came upon him.

I see your point.

But on the other hand

The manwas challenged by police who probably deemed it necessary to be sure he was not a danger to himself or the community.

The man knowing the police were present made some type of movement that appeared to be dangerous after likely being ordered to "FREEZE!"

It is simple. If you're out eating a meal withthefamily and are openly armed when you are challenged by the police. DO NOT MAKE ANY QUICK MOVEMENTS!!!

Although there were no details as to this part, when the crazy-acting guy went back to his car and got a gun, what do you want to be he didn't put on his holster and was just carrying it in his hands?

I think its pretty clear cut the situation. I think the police acted as they should have. If you had an argument with someone, they went out to their car to retrieve a firearm, how would you have reacted?

I think it is pretty safe to assume, if you are in a situation where you need your firearm and you can retreat and get it, you probably shouldn't be returning to the scene with it, you should be getting out of dodge!

I agree that a man who is armed shouldn'tautomaticallyviewed as a threat to the community.

However playing both sides as I do

In this case he was acting odd and it was reported that he had a gun. I recall it was in the waistbandThe police cannot shrug their shoulders and just let him drive off since he "has not done anything illegal."

I expect the police to check this guy out based on the way he is actingarmed or not.

I do not want him visiting a restaurant I am at and start shooting the place up. I am armed but there can be a loss of life before I can take any action and use justifiable deadly force against him.

This guy failed to freeze and he was shot. A lesson for us all who carry. Even if we think we are not breaking any laws you never know what someone just said about you inside the restaurant.

Correction: Omitted n't in error.

Reading this it sounds like a mall shooting was prevented. If the guy went out and got his gun from his car and started back towards the mall gun in hand, he wasn't there to go shopping...

Patrol officers were involved in a shooting this afternoon at the Tysons Galleria, located in the 2000 block of International Drive. Around 12:40 p.m. police were called for a disorderly man who reportedly had a gun on the mall property. Responding officers located the man outside on the upper-level parking deck and confronted him. The man failed to comply with the officers’ commands and made a movement toward a gun in his waistband. One officer discharged one round and the suspect was shot in the lower body. He was transported by ground to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Detectives from the Crime Scene Section, Criminal Investigations Bureau and Internal Affairs responded to the scene. This investigation is in its early stages and is ongoing

Officer who shot the individual does show lack of patience and skill behind his or her duty. Just because someone makes a normal hand movement towards their gun does not mean they are going to shoot you. When you can see the gun clearly visible from distance. If he was reaching inside his shirt or pocket after told to not reach then it becomes different situation. Anyway i though this was stupid from the part of the officers that are involved. :(
