HAMPTON - A high-ranking police official in Newport News was convicted in Hampton General District Court on Tuesday of drunk driving.
That came a day after her boss, Newport News Police Chief James Fox, demoted her by one rank -- stripping her of her "assistant chief" title -- because of the drunk driving offense.
Dawn D. Barber, 44, now a police captain, was pulled over at about 9:40 p.m. on Aug. 16 after a state police officer said she was weaving in and out of traffic and almost hit another car on I-64, near North King Street. She was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence.
After her conviction Wednesday, General District Court Judge Albert W. Patrick III gave Barber what her attorney said was a standard punishment for a first time drunk driving offense: A 30-day suspended jail sentence, and a one-year restricted driver's license that allows her to drive for work, a $250 fine and a requirement to attend a alcohol counseling program.
If Barber fails to follow through on the counseling program, the fine would double to $500, she could have to serve some or all of her jail term, and she could lose driving privileges altogether.
On Tuesday, after an internal investigation into the case, Fox demoted Barber by one rank -- from assistant chief to captain -- and told her that her duties would change. That came under a work-related discipline process separate from the court finding, Barber said.
"I made a serious error in judgment that has affected me personally and professionally," she said after Wednesday's hearing. "There are consequences to my actions. Of course I regret it."
