The Republican party must stop "shouting at the world" and start listening to minority groups if it is to win elections in the 21st century, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday. In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria for Sunday's "GPS" program, President Bush's former secretary of state said his party's attempt "to use polarization for political advantage" backfired last month. "I think the party has to take a hard look at itself," Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday.

"There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don't object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority."

Powell, who crossed party lines and endorsed President-elect Barack Obama just weeks before the election, said the GOP must see what is in the "hearts and minds" of African-American, Hispanic and Asian voters "and not just try to influence them by… the principles and dogma."

"I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country,"Powell said. "I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that." Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

"Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?" Powell asked. "Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?"

Zakaria's full interview with Powell will air Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on CNN.
Do not let the Republican SLimbaugh define conservatism.

Yeah, I think the republican party should take pointers from an idiot RHINO that endorsed Obama :uhoh::uhoh::uhoh:

These "minority groups", the way he is suggesting them, are interested in socialism.

I know lots of people from so called "minority groups" (ethnic as he indcates) that are republicans. He should have clarified his position (socialism) instead of dancing around it.

That's a bunch of BS. The left hated powell right up until he endorsed the afronazi. Now he's no longer an uncle tom, he's a "moderate" republican. Liberalism must be fought. Liberals never compromise and and stick with it, and they're the nastiest SOB's when it comes to polarization. The LIES and slander they used against Palin was beyond reprehensible.

Now we're stuck with a bunch of libs running the show, because wewere stuck with a"moderate" candidate. After all the bush hatred, the only thing boom boom seems ready to "change" is raising taxes on the people who actually provide investment and jobs. Powell can stick it in his colin.

I will never support boom boom. Even if he does something I agree with (not likely). The left tried their damnedest to thwart every effort that would have kept us out of the problems we face. I will put the minimum possible into taxes, even if it means working off the books for less money. So if you see a guy at home depot with a bucket of tools pushing mexicans out of the way trying to get work, that might be me.

The Republicans lost because they abandoned the conservative base. Trying to be Dem-light just doesn't inspire the backing required to win an election. Powell has never been shown to be a true conservative.

The Republican Party is lost in the wilderness. What I'm waiting for is one of the leaders in the Republican Party to stand up with the Communist Manifesto in their left hand and the Constitution of the United States in their right and say "If elected, I will do everything in my power to take everything that is in this (holds up his left hand) and remove it from this (holds up his right hand) and the laws of the United States of America".

That includes, among other things, a heavy and progressive income tax, a central bank with a monopoly, and public education.

That's what it will take to get me to vote Republican again.

You missed shooting the messenger.

But I agree that the GOP will have to show some unmistakably conservative spine before they even attain political-zombie status. For now the GOP is dead, dead dead and capitalism is the rotted wood stake through its putrid heart.

Do not confuse or conflate capitalism with conservatism.

When I said leader of the Republican Party, I mean someone with some creds that the press will listen to and report on. I really like Ron Paul and Alan Keyes but the press ain't gonna give them the time of day, sorry.
