State Crime Commission to take up 'gun-show loophole'

RICHMOND

After months of hearing from those on both sides, the Virginia State Crime Commission will decide today whether to endorse legislation to close the so-called gun-show loophole.

Victims and family members of those injured or killed by a student gunman at Virginia Tech have pleaded with the commission to support closing the loophole, in which private sellers at gun shows are not required to perform background checks on buyers.

Others have said gun opponents are using the Virginia Tech tragedy as an excuse to prevent law-abiding citizens from selling their private firearms.

While the commission's recommendation isn't required for a bill to be introduced, it's a signal of whether the legislation has a chance of passage.

Similar bills have been unsuccessful for the past five years.

The commission will meet at 10 a.m. at the General Assembly Building.

RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia State Crime Commission will not recommend closing the so-called gun-show loophole.
Tuesday's 6-6 tie vote means any legislation filed to close the loophole _ where private sellers at gun shows are not required to perform background checks on buyers _ will not get the commission's seal of approval.
The vote came after much political maneuvering.
Commission Chairman David Albo held off the vote until Republican Del. Jerry Kilgore showed up at the meeting, more than an hour after it started.
The tie vote was cast by Del. Ward Armstrong, a Democrat from a southwest Virginia district that favors guns. Republican leaders appointed Armstrong to the commission days ago to replace former Del. Brian Moran, a Democrat in favor of closing the loophole who resigned to run for governor.
The commission also recommended a bill requesting that the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms give Virginia State Police the power to arrest unlicensed gun dealers who attend gun shows in violation of federal law. The provision would also have gun show promoters pay a fee to pay for extra state police presence.

Outside it was a cold and lonely day......if you were at the Bell Tower. Nobody came, nobody listened. Sad that misfortune is so misused.

Inside the Va. Crime Commission did the right thing and voted to not recommend/endorse any new legislation to restrict private gun sales.

So what does this mean:

I asume that this refers to those who have tables with multiple weapons, but am not knowledgable as to what the threshold is between selling as a private citizen and being a dealer.

Other than saying "engaged in the business" BATF does not define it clearly either. They have in some cases hassled citizens because they had "sold too many" from their collections, while at the same time pulling FFL's from dealers because they "weren't selling enough".

So now the price for a table can go up, the ticket price can go up and you'll have VA State Troopers walking around infringing on our rights.

So now the price for a table can go up, the ticket price can go up and you'll have VA State Troopers walking around infringing on our rights.

Understand the increase in price. Volunteer (VCDL table) and get in free.

Do you perhaps think that local, state and/or BATFE agents are not at the gun shows now?

Was supposed to be. I was in Norfolk for court. Haven't heard anything or seen any reference to it from media - maybe its just old news.

One of the stories in the other thread of news coverage did mention it.

After the vote, supporters of the bill held a "lie-in" where about 35 people lay in the grass outside the capitol for three minutes, about the time it takes to run a background check.

Volunteering at the table isn't the point. (which me and the missus always do for both days here plus a lot of other things I do for the 2A that I don't brag about) I'm sure there are under covers there spying but we should not have this new stuff FORCED on us by the govenment. This is just another way to try to end gun shows and if anyone thinks going to dinners a couple times a month, handing out VCDL flyers at gun shows and going to Richmond once a year is enough your sadly mistaken.
