    VA-ALERT: URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT! 1/20/09

URGENT! Please follow the instructions below as soon as possible,
even if you can't do it until after this morning:

Today, Tuesday, January 20th, Senator Watkins has a bill, SB 1166,
that will be heard in subcommittee. It will raise the background
check tax on gun owners who are purchasing a gun 150%!

It will go from $2 to $5 if his bill becomes law.

This is the NICS check fee you pay the gun dealer when the dealer has
the State Police run a background check on you.

The question is - why are GUN OWNERS having to pay this tax at all???
The tax doesn't benefit gun owners. I already know I have a clean
background. I'm sure it is the same for you.

The argument for the tax is that it is for "public safety."

Fine, then the general public should pay for it out of the State's
    general funds!

Better yet, the Commonwealth could save MILLIONS by letting the
federal government do the NICS check for FREE and get the State Police
out of that business altogether. Therefore even the current $2 tax
    would not be necessary.

How did you find his e-mail address? The vcdl site just says my senator.

Use the "Who is my Legislator" link on the Senate web site: http://legis.state.va.us/

    Here's the direct link: http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform

When you submit the form, you can then get to the profiles for your senator/delegate. Their profile page has their email address.

When you use the automated system above, it figures out who your senator or delegate is using your address. No need to look it up. The only email you supply is YOUR email.

Oh, I know. I have my reps in my contact list though, so it's just as easy to send from my personal mail.

When I send my email, I'm going to suggest that the background check fee is just as odious to me as the concept of a "poll tax". One shouldn't have to pay the state in order to exercise a right, no matter how "nominal" the fee/tax is. The poll tax was a cynical way to try to prevent blacks and poor people from voting; the background check fee is a pesty, niggling way to tell us we have to bear the state's cost because our behavior is somehow undesirable.

Very good point. Undesirable or suspect or as I see it as I think the statute implies the State sees it, a privilege granted by the State. Therefore the State should not bear the cost.
