RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Senate committee has killed a bill that would allow localities to ban the possession on guns in libraries, parks and other government property.
The Senate Local Government Committee voted 5-10 Tuesday for Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple's bill, which would have allowed the localities to pass ordinances making it illegal to carry guns on government property.
Whipple argued that the state already bars individuals from carrying guns in churches, courthouses and public schools and that localities have the right to determine if they want to keep guns out of their facilities.
Opponents argued that passing the bill would create a patchwork of rules across the state and that law-abiding gunowners would be the ones most affected.
