I've read all I can find and have come to the conclusion that while driving from Virginia to PA, I need to pull over, drop and storethe mag on my gun, lock the gun in my trunk until I get to PA where I gan reverse this procedure and go about my business.

Does this sound accurate?

Spot on.

Unless you chose to avoid Maryland completely by zigging over through West Virginia. It is a little longer but much more scenic.

IANAL. Yes sir...stop before entering Maryland, unload and secure the firearm. After leaving Maryland, stop and reverse the previous actions. On the return trip, repeat same steps. IMHO, I wouldn't leave anything in plain sight within the vehicle that would advertise the "need" to conduct a search should you be stopped (i.e. holsters, mags, etc).

Remember, the firearm(s) being unloaded is that keydetail to remember, no magazine with rounds inserted in the firearm. Mags may be loaded, but mags containing rounds must not be inserted into firearm (i.e. I keep my mags loaded, but in a separate container or by themselves in the middle console - not by law, just 'cause that's what I do). I wrote to the Md AG regarding loaded mags and he replied that there was no law against it (although I've heard different from folks that have "heard" differently). For revolvers, no rounds in that spinny thingy.

I go through this silly (law-abiding every time, officer) ritual every time I leave and re-enter the state.

-OR-

Bypass the state and do without all the stopping and unplesant unloading and securing stuff :D

No offense to the residents, but I've decided to bypass Maryland all together. It will only take me 40 more minutes to drive around, than go through.

None taken here...I have to drive here becausewe live here (for now) until my refugee status is accepted by Virginia and I'm repatriated back to my home state (read: the housing market makes a comeback one day and we can sell our Md home and move back to Va).
A little extra time on the road to bypass the state and avoid disarming yourself...I'd say it's time well spent. Besides, taking the time for all the stops to unload and secure and vice versa...the extra time on the road to avoid the People's Republic is probably negated anyway :)

Be safe
