    Hey guys,

I know this isn't a story of self-defense, or a story about open-carrying, but I feel it's an important follow-up to my story of being attacked during Hurricane Ike, as I've already described here:

    http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum51/16554.html

DISCLAIMER: I'm having to censor some of the details of this story in order to protect the victim among other reasons, so forgive me if it jumps around or sounds awkward. Also, some of this is second-hand information.

I live in the Montrose area of Houston, which tends to be very peaceful and artsy. It's a very gay neighborhood full of cafes, nightclubs, and small retail outlets, and the biggest annoyances tend to consist of rednecks racing their trucks through the neighborhood and yelling obscenities at the locals.

Generally, if you keep to yourself you won't any trouble unless you look for it.

Last night around 8PM I walked down the street to an office building located just down the block from my home to meet up with a few friends before going to a party. A few minutes after 9PM I'm chatting with my friend X, when a friend of my friend X, whom I'll call Victim, stumbles into the building shaking, crying, and covered in blood because he had just been beaten with a baseball bat by some white guy in a truck. We got him cleaned up and tried to get him to calm down enough to start giving a detailed description of his attacker. He'd been threatened with further harm if he reported this violence to the police so it took a little bit of convincing to get him to agree to file a police report, but after reminding him that his attacker would likely attack others if not stopped he conceded.

I was extremely concerned that he could have been followed to the office building or might have another encounter en route to the police station so several of us decided to escort Victim. I chambered a round in my Glock and left the retention snap off my concealment holster while X and I escorted Victim to the police station to file a police report while watching for any approaching trucks matching Victim's description of his attacker.

We drove down the street (right by my home as well as the site where the truck that Victim identified as being the one driven by the attacker was *still* parked), and over to the police station without incident. After 30 minutes with the police the reports were filed, and we were sent on our way to get Victim medical attention.

    WHAT HAPPENED ::
Victim lives outside of Houston, but occasionally has to drive to this office building, and is somewhat familiar with the neighborhood because he's gay and has frequented the gay bars and related establishments in the area.

Yesterday evening at 9PM he was turning onto street A (which runs in front of my home) from street B but was proceeding slowly because a group of people were talking on the corner and visibility was poor. As he was making his turn a guy in a white truck (Attacker) pulls out around him and whips *around* the outside of the turn Victim was making, gives him the middle finger, honks his horn, and screeches to a stop in a parking spot across the street from my home. Victim is confused by this and stops his car and opens the door to try and find out why Attacker is upset at him, as he doesn't recognize him, nor have they had a traffic accident.
Attacker then jumps out of his truck, grabs a baseball bat, runs over to Victim and starts beating him in the face and knees while yelling, "That's what you get!, you see? That's what you get!" while Victim is pleading for mercy and asking what he did wrong.

Attacker then bashes Victim's car's a few times for good measure and tells Victim "If you bring the police over here you're *really* gonna be in a world of hurt" before leaving. Victim gets into his car and drives straight over to the building where X and I have been.
    ---------------------------------------------

This whole event has got me really really disgusted and angry for so many reasons. I've been checking up on all of my friends and warning them about this guy. The fact that the truck that Victim identified as being driven by Attacker was still parked in the covered parking area of the *same* apartment complex across the street from me until this afternoon has had me on edge. Additionally it's the same apartment complex where six years ago a friend of mine was stabbed several times with a steak knife by some white teenage kid in a mugging gone wrong. And it's also the same general area where the swordman that came running at me out of the darkness during Hurricane Ike appeared from (as I've already described in a previous post).

    Why did it happen?
I don't know. It's possible that Victim knew Attacker at some point and has some shared history that he doesn't remember. It's very possible that Attacker just wanted to gay-bash Victim (and there have been a number of gay bashings in this neighborhood over the years to back up that theory). It's possible that Attacker was high on amphetamines or cocaine and/or was experience "roid rage" due to steroid (ab)use and perceived something innocuous as a threat and flew into a rampage. All of these things are possible and I suppose it could be a combination.

    --EDITED for clarification

Yes there are few holes. It is unclear as written. Is the truck you have mentioned the same truck that was used by the guy who attacked your friend? If not, never mind. But if so, have you called the Police(where you filed the report) to let them know where the attacker is? Sorry to be picky, but if you know where the guy is who attacked your friend, you need to get him picked up right away. If I have mis-understood your post, sorry. Maybe reread it and clarify. Or maybe I should stop drinking my Sat. nite wine and re-read for clarification. I am very glad that you take your defense (and that of your friends, seriously). You sir, are a Sheepdog!

Yes, it was the same truck. I've edited the post to reflect that. Yes, we informed the police at the time that we filed the police report as to the location, make, model, plate, etc of the truck.

I do not know what actions the police did or did not take. I haven't seen any police activity on my block whatsoever (nor any windowless unmarked vans parked in view of that apartment complex).

Not meaning to bash the victem in any way, but the big mistake he made was stopping to confront the guy that flipped him off. He should have kept going. Even if the victem had been armed, he should have kept going.

Agreed 100% -- he should have never stopped his car, much less gotten out.

I believe he was caught off-guard as to why the attacker was angry and thought that possibly their vehicles may have scratched eachother and thus wanted to resolve the possible traffic incident. Obviously getting out of his car was a mistake, and one that he paid for quite dearly.

That being said, if he'd been armed he could have stopped his attacker from beating him so savagely.

    hmm..

    well, that un american

what the heck did we come here for in the first place...

freedom from prosecution?? judgement with* fair trial, freedom of religeon.. And a right to privacy..includeing sexual orientation...

When you give up that right to privacy, by visiting gay bars.. proclaiming your sexuality publicly somehow...even chat rooms.. bashers sometimes troll and trace...roleplay to find victims.. Or getting married <public records>

You may subject yourself and others to these attacks by ignorent people.. who don't understand.. this is their <gay persons> choice. And you should honor it as long as they respect your rights as well. And to shut up if you are proclaiming your sexuality in public... your private life is not a public matter unless u make it so..sometimes its not your fault..."flaming gay" people....make it harder for nice gay people to blend in.. and be normal.

"the guy should have never stopped..."

pedestrians have the right of way at all times.. weither him attacking you or threating changes things i dunno..

But if he's blocking your path and your a nice person.. your not gonna run him over.. But in seeing he was armed.. i wouldn't stick around to talk to the idiot..

too bad he's either long gone.. or lurking around.. I hope you catch this guy somehow and get a few licks in.. but dont do it alone...police escort if tht is your only option left.. tail him if need be.. but be certain..

I can't believe this happens in this country..and if the situation presents itself shoot to wound, not to kill.. If you are uncertain about your ability to do this.. you probably shouldn't be carying a loaded weapon...<<this is kinda of a joke so laugh damn it!! <if yur walking around with a gun i hope you have enough training to feel confident about where your shots go>

He has a right to walk in the street without getting a beatdown. But getting out of the car was a poor tactical decision. It's usually best to avoid trouble; even if you don't receive a beating, you may get tangled up with the law.

Never "shoot to wound". Shoot to hit the target. Shooting to wound is a good way to miss. Before deciding to cary a gun, you need to be certain that you understand that firearms are deadly weapons, and that you have to nerve to use deadly force if it comes to it. If you hesitate, you can get into even more trouble.
