I have a friend that wants to sell me his M91/30 M-N for $80. I inspected it and it looks good, except for the metal straps that hold the wood around the barrel are loose and let the top piece of wood slide around.. It comes with all the cleaning supplies and stuff that came with it and a bayonet. Its a 1942 and has a triangle with an arrow in it.
What do you guys think?

As long as the barrel is good and the action closes tight, I'd say go for it. If you do end up getting it, you'll want to spend some time at 7.62x54r.net, that site will help you identify exactly what it is and where it came from (arrow in a triangle is Tula, if I remember correctly). The history on them is almost as fun as actually shooting them.

The "metal straps" would be barrel bands, and the "top piece of wood" would be the handguard. The barrel bands are split rings and can be taken off and tightened up.

Buy the gun.

we had another Moisin thread around here somewhere not too long ago. Grab it. May be your first but probably won't be your last. Moisins are like potato chips. You can't have just one.

That, and they're full of grease when you get them.

Does too have a safety!

Damn toughest safety to set/unset I've ever fooled with, but it's there.

Pull back on the cocking knob and twist it a few degrees to the right.

Unset the safety by pulling back and twisting it back to the left a bit.

I like my K98 safety better (arguably one of the most user friendly IMO), but the MN M44 carbine is a ball to shoot. The shockwave quip is very true -- especially on the 44 :)

I can't say I've ever been brave enough to actually attemp to engage the safety with the gun loaded. I keep getting this feeling that while trying to disengage it my fingers will slip, at which point I have about a tenth of a second to pray that the trigger is in better shape than my fingers.

This is the ONE rifle I should have bought... but didn't. (kick-kick) I have fired them enough to admire them. They are brutal... efficient... non-nonsense, killing machines.

I could have had one (cond. mint) with the original 2X scope 'n pig sticker w/sling 'n accessories for $120. 'bout 14 years back...

Although I prefer the M44, I would buy the M91 for $80 bucks. Whatthey lack in accuracy, they make up for in sheer punch and range. Don't plan on shootingmore than 20 or 30 rounds each outing though,or your shoulder will regret it.
