VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A man wearing only his underpants caught a burglar breaking into his home and held him at gunpoint until officers could arrive, police said. The suspected prowler was facing serious charges after the alert homeowner caught him in the act and held him at gunpoint early Tuesday morning in northeast Vancouver. Police said Matthew Morris, 24, was trying to break into the family's cars and possibly their home, when he ended up facing the barrel of the homeowner's gun.

Tuesday, a woman FOX 12 will refer to only as "Sandy" was still shaken up over her family's startling wake-up call.

"We were afraid. I mean, my husband was afraid and I was afraid for my children and for our safety," Sandy said.

After a recent string of car break-ins, including one right next door, Sandy and her husband set out a motion sensor in front of their house.

So when the alarm was activated early Tuesday morning, they didn't hesitate.

"(We) went to the window and saw the person in between our two vehicles and then trying to look in the front window," Sandy said.

Her husband grabbed one of their guns and ran out to confront the man.

The firearm probably wasn't the only thing to catch the accused burglar by surprise since Sandy's husband was only wearing his underwear.

911 Call

DISPATCHER:[/b] Ma'am, who does your husband have out in the street at gunpoint? CALLER: [/b]Um, someone who was trying to break into our vehicles and our house. CALLER: [/b]My husband, he's standing buck, basically buck naked out in the yard. DISPATCHER: [/b]I know. I just want do know does he still have the gun on the suspect? CALLER: [/b]He just has it pointed down.

Listen To The 911 Call

Sandy's husband ordered the suspect to get on the ground and he kept him there, at gunpoint, until deputies arrived.

Sandy said she and her husband are trained to use their guns properly. Even though they hope they never have to fire them, she said she hopes her husband's actions send a message to other criminals.

"This area has been burglarized for the past two weeks, methodically down the street so hopefully that will come to an end now," Sandy said.

Morris was charged with attempted car prowling, trespassing and possession of meth. But officials said he has already bailed out of jail.

Bailed out of jail ALREADY? WTF? Are you kidding me? Wanna bet he doesn't show for court? I wonder how much this criminals bail was? WOW No wonder our courts are kangaroo courts.

Too bad the criminal wasn't stupid enough to give the guy reason to shoot him. Then the problem would really have been taken care of. Now the guy will just get off and do it again. Good going for the guy who took care of business though.

I have a shotgun with #7 lead shot in it for home defense. #7 won't do as much damage to what is behind the target and is less likely to travel further than you'd want it to.

I'd suggest stepping up to #4 bird shot. It'll do much more damage to the bad guy, but still won't be lethal after it goes through two layers of drywall. No.7 might be a bit on the small side.

EDIT: After more reading from later links posted in this thread, I've decided that #2 birdshot is best for my application and I'd suggest that to you in lieu of the #4 I originally suggested.

Good reading: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm

You can make your own decision.

loads a blank black page with banner ad

EDIT: Nevermind, third refresh did the trick.

He was using#4 BUCK shot not No.4 BIRD shot, which punched through 6 layers of drywall and stopped on the 7th. He says #1 Buck shot performed identical to#4 Buck shotI'm curious how No.4 BIRD shot like I mentioned would do.

Alright, here's some terminal (gelatin) ballistics data to complement the drywall penetration data:

http://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/ballistics_shotgun.html

Cross reference the terminal performance from this site with the drywall penetration box-of-truth site to figure out what is safe in your home and what will end the threat in your situation.

Box of truth quote from the link you posted: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3_2.htm

"Birdshot penetrated through two pieces of drywall (representing one wall) and was stopped in the paper on the front of the second wall. The problem with birdshot is that it does not penetrate enough to be effective as a defense round."
TacticalShotgun.ca quote from: http://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/content_nonsub/gelatin_testing/bird_2_rem_express/bird_2_rem_express.html

"Small sized birdshot such as this #2 express load is a poor choice for deployment with a tactical shotgun. Wounds inflicted from birdshot tend to be gruesome yet shallow as they lack the penetration required to reach vital cardiovascular or central nervous system structures. For ultra close range applications (ie: inside your home) this load would likely be effective, however an operator should be prepared to follow up with larger shot in the event that additional force is required to stop a threat."

So where I live the #2 will get the job done at ultra-close ranges (3 yards or so, inside my house with 98 pellets penetrating around9") and won't endanger any of my neighbors if I miss (2 layers of drywall stops the pellets from being lethal). Buck shot and slugsmay endangermy neighbors. #6 birdshot or smaller won't kill the bad guy, but will just piss him off. Keep in mind, this review of the birdshot was written from the perspective of an operator. Their mission parameters are very different from the apartment or condo dwellers' constraints.

I will admit that my choice of #4 birdshot was too far down the light side and suggest #2 birdshot as a better choice for my situation. If you live in a house out in the country and not in a condo or an apartment you could use the 00 buck or slugs, and probably should.

EDIT: The box of truth site is indeed well-worth the read. Thanks for sharing it with us. By the way, we're officially way off-topic here.

Too bad they didn't find a gun on the bad guy, he would still be in jail. Friggin idiots, for just the possession charge, he should be going up for a long time. Getting caught with that stuff should (IMHO) carry a summary death sentence, since you're trying to kill yourself already.
Hope he gets nailed to a tree or something......ugghhhh!
