I believe that one has to "knowingly" violate the school zone law. An "accidental" violation ought not to result in a conviction. But, yeah, it's not a perfect world so I understand your reluctance.

Here's the actual wording:


"Any individual who knowingly possesses a firearm at a place that the individual
knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone is
guilty of a Class I felony."

I'm not certain what "reasonable cause to believe" would be-- maybe seeing "school crossing" signs, although in my part of Madison there are such signs that are in excess of 1000' feet of the school property.
