...I don't think they can legally press the issue...or they would...if the beeper doesn't signal an unchecked item, they can't legally detain you as you walk out...unlike Sam's or Costco, which are private shoppers clubs with rules you agree to as a member....I walk by them at Walmart all the time....not being rude, just briskly walking....

I went by Wal-Mart yesterday to check out the ammo situation. I was open carrying a full size 1911 with two loaded mags in a pouch on my belt.
The clerk at the ammo counter didn't even cover his eyes. :D He opened the case and handed me two boxes of Winchester .22, 1000 rounds, and commented that they were having trouble keeping up with the demand for popular calibers. He asked me to pay at the sporting goods counter and wished me a nice day. No hysteria, or mayhem.
No one wanted to see my receipt as I left.

I'm pretty sure you're right. My cousin's a Wal-Mart employee in Illinois (I think..) and he said you can just walk right past them.

IANAL. I have no cite, just hearsay. All the usual disclaimers.

I just have my receipt in hand as I'm usually reviewing it on my way toward the door to ensure I didn't get over-charged somehow.

I don't get stopped unless I beep (which I typically do when I enter, not when I leave. Go figure.).

Though one visit we had to have a video game we bought sent over the degausser 4 times before it stopped beeping on exiting the store.

I wonder if any of the local walmarts in Norfolk Va carry ammo. Not seen any.

Walmart left me with a bad taste in my mouth years ago, when they started checking receipts on the way out the door.

Walmart Gestapo: "Sir, may I see your receipt?"

ME: "No thank-you"... and keep walking all the way to my vehicle.

They don't seem to do this so much these days. Maybe enough people complained?

I also hate this. I usually just walk by them and don't pay attention.

Here's an alternative way to deal with theChina-Mart greeter.

I've found that if I make eye contact, smile, and say, "Have a nice day" they don't stop me. Obviously, if I were stealing things, I would do that, right?

I noticed something interesting tonight shopping there. I bought a small hatchet (hubby said he needed one). Would you believe the register popped upwith the "Must be 18 to purchase" message? I just laughed and told the clerk, "Yeah, I'm over 18" and she cleared the message and continued. Seriously, they card you to buy a hatchet now? Someone's been watching too many horror movies.

I wonder if they'd card me if I bought a big set of steak knives?

After waiting over 10 minutes at the sporting goods counter I finally found someone who told me that the tire center manager could get me the ammo I needed. I see the tire manager who tells me he doesn't have the keys but will page a manager that can help me. Another 10 minutes pass and nothing. I head back to the tire center when I hear someone paging a manager to sporting goods. I head back over, and wait.

Finally a employee and a manager show up. I tell him I need 2 boxes of the Federal bulk .22 ammo (525rds) and the remaining 5 boxes of 16ga shotgun shells (I've been to 3 different stores for 16ga shells, this is the only store that had any left). The employee tells me he will have to call the floor supervisor to get authorization for the amount of ammo I am buying. I point out that on the endcap they are selling 100rds of 12ga that needs no one to open a cabinet. He says he still has to call it in.

The floor supervisor shows up and says the ammo I am buying will have to be escorted to the front. Now I am like WTF? I ask why must it be escorted, I've never had to do this before as I've bought 1k rounds of 12ga (yeah it filled the cart but at $15 per hundred it was worth it). It turns out that because I am armed with my 1911 he felt they should be escorted. I pointed out to him that my 1911 shoots a .45acp and the .22 and 16ga would not work.

I put a call into the Regional Manager for my area.

FREAKIN SHEEPLE
I have not EVER been escorted after buying ammo.

I did have a manager freak out at the sight of my sidearm and tell me I had to leave the store. She could not give a valid reason for her decisionso I told her I was going to buy a car alarm and go. I knew exactly where it was and did not plan to walk around.

She submitted and allowed me to make my purchase and go. I was polite and willing to go but talked her into letting me get what I wanted.

If the store wants to freak out and they have a great price on ammo, you need to get past it and take advantage of the price.

I have been carrying a while now and NEVER been, witnessed, or seen anyone in the area get robbed. I have little fear that my disarming for 10 minutes is going to be detrimental to my life.

While I take your point, the people at Luby's restaurant did not think it would be an issue to disarm for the time it took to eat a meal either. A surprise is a surprise because it is unexpected.

...excellent point, Hawkflyer...a gunfight erupted in a Cedar Hill Wal-Mart last year because police went in to arrest a man who was wanted...and he pulled a gun and opened fire...in the store...at 2 something in the afternoon....you never know when and where...if you've made the decision to carry...carry diligently...you may be part of the solution someday...

I think the greeter who grabbed the off-duty cop's arm probably broke all kinds of policies...that's not what they're there for...wonder why the cop beeped......I beeped all last summer in and out of Home Dippy...till I found the tags sewn inside the six work shirts I'd bought there.......never was asked to stop or come back....I think the ire Wal-Mart earns is due to it's arbitrary way of acting...you never know what to expect...

Hey there Hawk.. top of the morning to ya'.

Ain't that the truth. Luby's and a host of other places/events. A stock in trade response from people who question why someone would want to carry a defensive arm is, "do you really think you need it there (or here)". The Luby's incident is a perfect example because of the innocense of it (having lunch on a nice day), the amount of people killed, and the manner of the initial attack (crashing a truck through the front of the restaurant). Who would have thought?

On a lighter side, I told Nelson_Muntz the other day a good response to someone who might ask why you carry a gun. Answer as, "because I'm too old to die". Doesn't really matter what age you are, it gives them pause for just a moment to think about it.

I buy all my ammo at Wally World except for hollow points.

I always pay at the sporting goods counter and they bag it. I can then shop for everything else. They never say anything about how much I buy. In fact, they know me pretty well about now and see me coming and just say yes we have it or no we dont. LOL

At one of the WM's the manager is a friend .
