Man shot with own gun while trying to stop assault
Yakima Herald-Republic PARKER — A 30-year-old Yakima man was shot in the leg with his own shotgun Monday while trying to help a woman who was being assaulted, Yakima County sheriff’s deputies said.
The wound was not life-threatening, according to a news release by Sgt. Jeff Gillespie.
The incident was reported about 9:15 a.m. near the historical marker on southbound U.S. Highway 97 just south of Union Gap.
The man told authorities he saw a woman being assaulted in a parked car and pulled over to help. He approached the car with a shotgun he had in his pickup, but the suspect ran into the nearby orchard, Gillespie said.
As the victim was trying to retrieve his cell phone from his truck, the suspect returned and picked up the shotgun, which the victim had set on the ground.
The suspect shot the victim once in the leg, deputies said. The injured man was then able to grab the shotgun and drive himself to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.
The suspect and the woman with him apparently left the area in the suspect’s car before deputies arrived, Gillespie said. Authorities had not found them by late afternoon.
The suspect was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds, with black hair.
The suspect’s vehicle was described as a maroon 1980s Ford Escort. The rear bumper, as well as the front bumper on the driver’s side, are primer gray.
Anyone with information about the case may call the sheriff’s office at 574-2500.
Gillespie said that witnesses should report such incidents quickly to police without trying to approach those involved.
