My latest personal letter to Walmart (some of you may recognize pieces of it)
A little about me before we begin; I carry a gun about my person on a daily basis. I have a concealed pistol license issued by Washington State which means I’ve passed all the necessary State and Federal background checks for someone to carry a gun. I am a Combat Veteran and I was also on various US Army pistol teams during my 9.5 years in the service. Depending on my manner of dress I may conceal my weapon or Open Carry my weapon both of which, are legal to do so in Washington state. Open Carry does not require a license only concealed carry. When I am at your store I am usually there for 1 to 1.5 hours to spend several hundred dollars. In the winter I do not like to wear my coat inside as I get to warm. Each time that I have been approached in Walmart I was open carrying my Para Ordinance 1911 pistol on my hip in a leather holster. At no time was I touching or handling the weapon to cause concern for anyone.
I have been carrying a personal weapon for the last 20+ years. It is rare that I get stopped or questioned by anyone when I carry my weapon. I am well versed on Washington state and Federal gun laws however when I am approached by one of your managers I hear all manner of reasons as to why I am not allowed to carry my weapon in the manner that I do or in your store, none of which make any sense. I have found that Walmart managers of the stores here in the Tacoma / Seattle area have no standard as to the actual Walmart policy on weapons carried by customers in your stores. I have been asked to leave, escorted out by security, had law enforcement called, all because I was legally carrying a weapon on my person. Please read RCW 9.41.270. Is there an official policy that customers are not allowed to legally carry firearms in Walmart stores in accordance with the law of the state in which they reside? If so, could you please send me a copy of that policy? One that I can show store managers if the situation arises again. If there is an official policy or if you are allowing the managers of your stores to set policy in this area, could you please explain why you feel that law abiding citizens can not be trusted with the means of their own defense?
Although I recognize your right as a property owner to set rules for your customers, I would hope that you would not choose to limit the ability of your customers to defend themselves, especially while causing no trouble for your other customers or your business.

Interesting phone calls tonight from 2 different Walmart managers who called me in reference to my online emails to Walmart. One manager is at the Puyallup store the other is at the Bellingham store.
Going all off memory here as I got both phone calls driving home tonight.
Puyallup conversation was weak. The manager Josh (who would not give his last name if his life depended on it) @ store 2403 on South Hill, 253-841-4831 told me that while legal carry is allowed, anytime a complaint comes from other customers they will ask me to leave even though I am doing nothing wrong. I questioned him on the following scenario. I am in the store pushing a shopping cart and a complaint is made against me for carrying a firearm, I will be asked to leave? Answer, Yes. Ok, I asked what if I see a guy pushing a cart and he has piercings and tattoo's am I suppose to call a manager becasue I feel threatened? Again the answer is yes. Anyone who feels threatend by another customer can alert a manager. While Josh says he has grown up around weapons and supports 2A, I feel he will ask you to leave in any issue pertaining to a firearm.
I did get the Distric Manager's name and number for the Puyallup area:
Matti Havener 253-841-4831 - This number is for the Puyallup store so when the greeter answers just ask for Matti Havener, her office is based out of the South Hill location.
Bellingham conversation went very well. The manager Terry ( I missed getting his last name because I was driving, 360-647-1400) and I had a pleasent conversation. He talked with his Security manager who informed him of some Washington gun laws. I asked him the same questions as I did of Josh in Puyallup as to the scenarios. I was told they would follow up with each person and determine if there was a threat. I gave him information on the RCW 9.41 and especially .270 which he pulled up on the computer while we were talking. I told him that across the state & country no manager was consistant with the firearm policy in Walmart by customers. I was told by Terry that in his store he would be doing some training with his managers and assistant managers. I asked his does that include his sporting goods staff? He asked why? I told him of an incident where I had my purchase escorted out of the store when I was carrying my firearm after I bought 100 rounds of shotgun shells. I was told they would get the training as well.
Like I said it was a very good conversation. Terry will be discussing more with his security team and promised to call back.
(Now is where I will get bashed...)
I went the extra step and asked both managers about a written policy on firearms.
Puyallup - It won't happen.
Bellingham - Terry is pushing the email I sent higher and is seeing what can be done. Like us he sees the need for a standard policy.
Expect more of my memory to kick in after a beer and some food....

Good job M1gunr, I have been busy this last week but had very positive phone call from Terry and asked similar question for a definitive document or a copy of what he was reading to me. He read from corporate policy to me and he said he would do what he could do. It sounded like it wasn't manager discretion like the one guy had told me and from what I heard from other managers but it sounded like from him it was corporate policy to follow state law. He also stated that wal-mart is a pro 2nd A ammendment. And that I am welcome to open carry in any Wal-mart in my local area.

Nice to see you back SVG, Its nice you got call from Walmart, next time you talk to them as for an email response so that you can carry that documentation with you while doing opencarry next time in Walmart. We are trying to have a Opencarry community awareness get together here in Seatac area possibally on 28th of march see if you can come in with few of your buddies we will appriciate this. Its been discussed under "Shots fired at Willows..." thread. We are trying to involve media and police too.
