A man wanted in connection with a Sunday morning murder is now behind bars.

Stan Williams of New Bern was arrested around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday in Kinston by the SBI Criminal Apprehension Team.

He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a weapon into occupied property.

Killed in the shooting outside Club Insomnia on Highway 55 West was Cameron Gatling. Police said Gatling was killed after an argument in the parking lot.

New Bern police spokesperson Beth Stevenson says right now Williams is only charged with the assault of Gatling, and not murder. She said police are continuing to investigate the homicide.

Williams is in the Craven County jail on a $1,000,000 bond and will have a first court appearance Wednesday morning.
Lets see, where do we start? The law that makes it illegal for a felon to possess a firearm didn't stop this guy. The law that makes it illegal to discharge a firearm at that location didn't stop this guy. Assuming he had been in the club at some point, the law that makes it illegal for him to have a firearm in a place where alcohol is served, or where admission has been charged, didn't stop this guy. The law that makes it illegal to kill someone didn't stop this guy.

The victim here could have been a law abiding gun owner that left his only effective defensive tool at home because of the laws that didn't stop his murderer.

We need to fix this crap yesterday.
