Perfectly legal to be loaded and chambered.

Otherwise a personal defense weapon is useless as anything other than a bludgeoning weapon.

No different answers in VA. Carry loaded.

Different answers?

A round should be chambered when carrying for defense, whether carrying concealed or openly.

I've never heard anyone suggest otherwise.

I've never heard anyone suggest carrying with a round chambered is illegal.

Agree, what good would a fire extinguisher be if you had to fill it up before using it!

I carry chambered with the safety *off*. No fumbling for the safety when tenths of a second may count. Of course before I remove the gun from it's holster for any other reason the safety goes on first and stays on until *after* it's reholstered.

I do not know if this is true but I was talking to a off duty officer. He was telling me different towns had different laws about OC. He told me that Dayton, VA had laws against having one in the chamber for example. Not sure if it's true or if I'm wording it right. I think Dayton is the town he told me. Is this true or did he not know what he was talking about?

I don't think those are your only two options.

That notwithstanding, localities are not allowed to regulate such things. They may well have the ordinance, but it would be preempted by state law. But don't take my word for it, especially since IANAL.

Statewide preemption.

There are LEOs in a lot of jurisdictions that still don't understand this.

There are no "different" laws.

Maybe the OP has read/heard answers regarding states other than VA and that is where the different answers are arising. In some states there are conditions under which one may only carry unloaded or without one in the chamber.

1911/2011, Chambered, cocked and locked. The only way for a good guyto safely carry. Very dangerous for the bad guy.

Feel free to carry without a round in the chamber, just don't regret it when the BG doesn't give you the time to pull the slide and defend yourself in time.
