The Virginia ratifying convention met from June 2 through June 26, 1788. Edmund Pendleton, opponent of a bill of rights, weakly argued that abuse of power could be remedied by recalling the delegated powers in a convention. Patrick Henry shot back that the power to resist oppression rests upon the right to possess arms:

Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.

I wish more people understood this. It's a very simple concept, yet so many are all-to-willing to settle for a permission slip instead of having to revolt against tyranny. It's the entire "lesser of two evils" dichotomy both major political parties rely on for votes.

Free men are few and far between these days.

Oh, and my favorite variation of two quotes in the OP:

Saying guns kill people is like saying spoons made Micheal Moore fat. (Check out Bowling for Columbine if you don't know who that is.)
