To the VCU and VCU Health System Communities:

VCU Police report that four robberies were committed early this morning by an unknown assailant in the vicinity of the Monroe Park Campus. Three of the robberies involved students. There were no injuries.

Victims described the suspect as a black male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, thin build and around 30 years old. He displayed a knife in three of the four incidents. In two incidents, he wore a black jacket with a fur hood and a red shirt. He also was described as wearing a blue vest with a white shirt in one of the incidents. He wore a hat in two incidents and was described as having close-cut hair.

The first robbery happened around midnight at the intersections of South Laurel and West Cary streets and involved one student victim. The second robbery happened approximately 12:55 in Monroe Park and involved two students. The third robbery happened at 1:05 a.m. near the Oliver Hall loading dock at Harrison and Main streets and involved two students. A fourth robbery at 3:50 a.m. happened at Cumberland and Belvidere streets. The victim in the last robbery was not a VCU student.

VCU Police and the Richmond Police departments are working together to identify and apprehend the suspect. They ask that you report any suspicious activity (828-1234) and to use the VCU Escort Service (828-WALK). VCU Police also remind VCU students, faculty and staff to use well traveled and lit areas when walking at nighttime around or near campus, to notify police immediately of any suspicious activity or if they are victims of a crime and to travel in groups. The university community also is reminded that more than 300 emergency phones with a direct line to VCU Police are located throughout the Monroe Park and MCV campuses.

We will update you on these incidents as more information becomes available.

    Sincerely,

    John M. Bennett

Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration

Had anyone of the victims been carrying, this would be a non-issue, and would instead be reported as a self defense incident during a failed robbery... especially with the criminal bringing a knife. Guess one day he'll slip up and pick the wrong person though and the phrase "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" will literally flash right before his eyes.

And it's already been well-established that the "no guns" rule only applies to the school proper, not the public streets and thoroughfares adjacent... which belong to the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" <- classic.

I'm not questioning the email, however the circumstances are almost identical. I too am on the email list and I received not a word.

Almost identical, except for the fact that in these there is one criminal instead of a pair and instead of a revolver, or semi-auto that the other in the pair was wielding, he was using a knife.

Four robberies in three hours near VCU’s Monroe Park campus

    By Staff Reports

    Published: March 6, 2009

Virginia Commonwealth University police are investigating four related robberies that occurred early this morning in the vicinity of the school's Monroe Park Campus -- three of which involved students, a university official said in an e-mail alert to the campus.

No one was injured by the lone suspect, who reportedly displayed a knife in three of the four holdups.

According to the alert distributed by John M. Bennett, senior vice president for finance and administration, the first robbery occurred about midnight at the intersection of South Laurel and West Cary streets and involved one student victim.

The second stickup involved two student victims and occurred about 12:55 a.m. in Monroe Park. The third involved two student victims occurred at 1:05 a.m. near the Oliver Hall loading dock at Harrison and Main streets.

Lastly, another person was robbed -- not a student -- about 3:50 a.m. at Cumberland and Belvidere streets.

Bennett said VCU Police and Richmond police are jointly investigating the robberies. Suspicious activity can be reported at 828-1234.

The suspect was described as black, about 30, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and close-cut hair. In two of the robberies he wore a hat, a red shirt and a black jacket with a fur hood. In one of the holdups, he was described as wearing a blue vest with a white shirt.

"VCU Police also remind VCU students, faculty and staff to use well-traveled and lit areas when walking at nighttime around or near campus, to notify police immediately of any suspicious activity or if they are victims of a crime and to travel in groups," Bennett wrote.

Seems like it didn't take the students too long to forget that VCU student who was shot and killed for refusing to be kidnapped/protecting his girlfriend last year.
