I was just wondering, is it legal to carry a loaded handgun with 9mm hollow points in kentucky? i thought about getting my CCDW permit but decided to open carry instead, though i'm a 22 year old male who may fit the leo's criteria as a criminal, i'm not, so i can harrassed quite often and get hassled at places like WalMart... with the extra attention I'm afraid to carry anything that i'm unsure about... the guy at WalMart tells me they're perfectly legal for me to carry, however, i've heard other opinions... can anyone answer this for me??? thanks

If hollow points weren't legal to carry, you wouldn't be able to buy them in the stores.

As to you probability of being harrassed by LEO's,(I assume this is due to your young age and maybe your attire) you might want to consider cleaning up your act a bit, to lessen the unwanted attention from LEO.

thats what i figured, thanks for your help... as far as my appearance, not every young male who dresses as i do is a criminal. i think that leo should not be so narrow-minded and stereotype people based on looks... that's kinda one reason why i choose open carry.. to exercise my right and no matter how much they hate it i'm still gonna do it... each time they harass me for no reason, a real criminal is probably getting away with a real crime.

LEOs dont necessarily stereotype people. 1. Most criminals do that for you. 2. Most media outlets help occasionally and 3. you have to thank those doctors that go to school for 10 years and develop the ability to profile. Oh and dont forget history. That helps too.

so basing the way i look on the way a guy who broke the law looks isnt considered stereotyping? i think so... basing me on someone in the past definately is stereotyping. if they were to run my record and see that i'm not a criminal then they'd leave me alone, they're simply basing they're decision on how i look and not my actions or my past... they can blame it on criminals that look like me, history, blah blah blah, but they arent harassing me based on me, but on stereotypes....

why would they not be legal? If you carry FMJ in your firearm and you use it in self defense, the round will most likely pass through the target and hit an innocent bystander...

if you could not buy them, then Walmart would not sell them.

so you're 22--how do you fit the criteria of a criminal in the mind of a LEO? Quite frankly, the majority of the population in this country fits the criteria of a potential criminal in the minds of most LEOs so you should not feel bad about that....but I digress.

Go through Kentucky code, or better yet, if you are unsure, sit down with a specialist in firearms law or self defense in Kentucky and simply get a legal opinion from them--it should not cost you more than $50 for that. You could always carry frangible rounds, although I have heard bad and unflattering things about them.

but again, if Walmart has them on their shelf--then it is legal to buy them, as long as you can legally possess a firearm and the related ammunition. carrying anything less than JHP for close protection is just silly when it comes to a handgun...now with a rifle, if it comes down to needing a rifle for close protection you will need the round to go through car doors, so you would want FMJ or that....but in a handgun--JHP. Just my .02 cents.

Mostpeople have a mindset.....'If it walks like a criminal, looks like a criminal, and sounds like a criminal.....then it must be'. Simply don't imitate criminals.

Now....no restrictions on HP ammo, as others have said.:dude:

LEOs dont necessarily stereotype people.
sure they do--they do it regularly and are taught to do so. Why do you think they view most people as criminals in waiting?

and if they unlawfully stop and detain you without PC then you may have a cause of action against them, especially if they falsely arrest you, or detain you long enough to the point that a reasonable person would believe that he or she was under arrest, harass you or violate any of your Constitutional rights...

That's not even close to true, even if a FMJ did pass through a subject the numbers of bullets that pass through subjects and hit innocent bystanders, in both police and civilian self defense situations are so low they can't even be based as a statistic

Add: If I had to put a guess on it it would probably be close to 1 in 5,000,000 cases this happens in

i'm really not trying to turn this into an argument about cops stereotyping people, i was simply explaining why i was asking... i don't get falsely arrested or any of that, just extra attention, name ran, inconveniences. I don't walk or act like a criminal... the fact that i'm 22 and wear the clothes i do and have tattoos they assume i'm a criminal. i in no way walk, talk, act, imitate a criminal... i was just unsure i received several different answers to this question elsewhere so i figured i'd ask some people who know... i thank you all for your help....

Well you could always hide the HP in the mag under the FMJ one on top
if you are that paraniod about profilling.
But then again if you are the profiled BG, you can also claim they loaded the HP
rounds. So stay out of Jersey.

I prefer a HP - HP - FMJ pattern to my rounds, If I reach the 3rd round it is because
I need some penetration. Of course the 3rd mag is all FMJ rounds.
If i'm still fireing after 37 rounds, I don't want anything that will not penetrate
whatever the perp is hiding behind.
There should be no inocents' arround to worry about through shots in this
big a fight. Only a few DC sheep may still be standing around, but I have
never seen anything that dumb outside of there.

I would love to have every 9th round a depleated uranium bullet. But can't
find any around here. Next time I go by a reactor I might drop in and
see about some.
They do not appear to be on my no carry list.:what:

Haha. Sadly, depleted uranium handgun rounds are illegal, same as steel core. For some odd reason the feds are afraid of us having penetrating rounds in concealable forms. Figures <insert eye rolling emoticon here>
