Who is buying all the ammo?

So, I was at the Fredericksburg Gun Show today and picked up a Ruger LCP. There was only one vendor at the show that had any .380 left, but his prices seemed a bit high. So, I figured I'd go to Wal*Mart to buy it instead...

Well, I get to my local Wal*Mart in northern VA and find their ammo shelves bare, minus a bunch of CCI 9mm, .40, and .45. I get to talking to the cashier at the sports counter and he mentioned something about the warehouse they get their ammo from saying that "the government" bought 70% of the warehouse's ammo stock.

It struck me that someone was alleging that the government was buying up ammo stock and I was wondering if there were any truth, beyond speculation, that these types of purchases are really happening.

I tried to pick up a box of Winchester SXZ .40 cal at Bass Pro today and the shelves were bare.

hows does that sxz perfom I was pretty skeptical about it because of the price for a box of 50 hp's.

It's the OBAMA Regime, buying the ammo at cost, holding onto only to mark it 500% to "HELP" stimulate the economy at legal gun owners expense.

Weve been out of .380 since December, and had standing orders for it since then. Simple answer, demand has exceeded supply on an unprecedented level. I wish I knew when this would end but I think we are in for a long period of short supplies.

Panic driven morons who are buying more than they will shoot in a lifetime. The people buying 10,000 rounds probably will never shoot 2,000.

Hopefully when the panic dies down over ammo, people will be in the need of cash and start selling their stock at discount prices

But, I reload so meh. Still reloading components are hard to come by as well.

I havent shot it myself yet but the reviews I have read have been favorable/ok. Its a good price because its apparently a special brand being marketed only to Bass Pro, from what I understand.

Its unique too because they have HP's and training ammo that have a different bullet head but are supposed to perform the same for uniformity in training/carrying.

Longwatch, what do you have/ prices for powders and primers?

Weve just hit zero on primers. We still have a fair amount powder running around $25 a pound, but the popular powders like everything else popular are running low.

FWIW, the government is now apparently required to destroy all spent brass, instead of selling it.

Or at least, that's what GA Arms was saying on their main page.

I saw that last night on their web page. What came to mind:

This is a deliberate attempt to hold .223 and .308 brass off the reloading market.
This will force recreational shooters to buy first-use ammo atits higher price.

On the other hand. The draw-down of forces in Iraq will result in less ammo fired down range, eventually resulting in gov't surplus or production overruns which will hit the market. The price of that ammo? who knows.

I think the frenetic purchasing is ahead of the noBama's idea of increasing the tax on ammo by 500%. I'm sure someone here knows better than me; but isn't there an 11% "value added" tax on firearms and ammo? And noBama's idea would increase that to 55% ?

I do know that the fountain of ammo has nearly run dry. Oh to have a crystal ball.

I still question their interpretation of the rule - it is demil code b, but not all brass is demil code b - govliquidation still has brass up there that is "no mutilation required"

I sent a email to Winchester after hearing reports it was like the Winchester USA white box hollow points and then other saying it was like the Black Talons. I sent them a email to clear it up and they sent back that the it was the exact same as the USA stuff(white box stuff) except for the black coating.

I'm not sure about the regular training versions as they are clearly different but the hollow points seem to just be the Winchester White Box stuff with a black coating.

There is an excise tax on all firearm/hunting related equipment. It is from the Pittman - Robertson Wildlife restoration act from the 1930's. It's was intended to save wildlife that had become near extinct in some places. The Money is supposed to be apportioned to each states Game department and is used to help fund Hunter safety programs and wildlife conservation. Apparently the Turkeys, Black bears , Elk,etc. in Arlington County haven't head of it though. Oh, that's right, there is no suitable habitat anymore in Arlington County so those game animals aren't there anymore. I guess that act is just a government money maker now.

Conserve the ammo that you have. That's the only answer to the situation at this time. Maybe you don't need to go to the range as often as you do. Maybe you don't need to shoot as much ammo during each visit to the range. Maybe you don't need to stockpile ammo. Is the threatened tax really going to drive you to the poor house? Or will buying ammo that is in short supply at inflated prices do that a lot faster? As for ammo that may be banned... I guess you're SOL unless you can get your hands on it or make it yourself from scratch.

Or maybe it's a Government causing the ammunition shortage, but maybe it's not the U.S. or any State Governments. Maybe foreign Governments are stockpiling ammunition, too. They could have agents in the country that are stockpiling and smuggling it out of the country. Any conspiracy theorists want to run with that one? :uhoh:
